Holiday apartment in Vikbolandet: Nature, islands and churches

Vikbolandet combines impressive natural scenery with traces of church history at churches and historic sites. At Svensksundsviken, a shallow sea bay, around twenty islands and extensive grazed coastal meadows meet a remarkable bird population: more than 230 bird species have been observed there. At the same time, trails lead to viewpoints, birdwatching towers and historic sites.

Nature

In the Svensksundsviken Nature Reserve, the trail begins at the main car park. After 650 metres, it leads either to the viewpoint or to the birdwatching tower. Together, the two branch trails are approximately 1.5 kilometres long. Picnic tables, a shelter, barbecue sites, a dry toilet and the birdwatching tower are among the facilities available. The area can be reached by bus from Norrköping, Östra Husby or Arkösund. The nearest bus stop to the main entrance is called “Konungsunds by” and is approximately 300 metres from the main car park.

The Bråxvik Nature Reserve is also located on the Baltic coast near Vikbolandet. It includes extensive coastal meadows and old coniferous forest. In summer, cattle graze the meadows and parts of the forest. Visitors will find a small car park for two or three cars, a picnic table and an information board; there are no other visitor facilities.

The Bråviken Marine Nature Reserve covers a large part of the Arkösund archipelago and includes around one hundred islands and skerries. A trail just over four kilometres long begins at the mainland car park and passes a shelter and a barbecue site at Skutviken. In the nearby Norrkrog Nature Reserve, an approximately three-kilometre-long, orange-marked trail also starts at the car park at Stegeborgsgården. It offers views of Slätbaken Bay and Eknön. A separate, marked 400-metre trail leads to a place of contemplation with a view of Stegeborg Fortress.

Culture and history

The nearby ruins of Stegeborg Castle were one of Sweden’s most important fortresses in the Middle Ages and a royal castle until the 17th century. They are open to visitors every day all year round. In the western Vikbolandet region, the municipality has seven churches and is happy to show them to visitors. Konungsund Church was built in 1801–1802 to replace a medieval church and was designed by Olof Tempelman. Its furnishings include a granite baptismal font from the 13th century.

Other churches make the history of the region visible through their construction phases and works of art. Dagsberg Church on Vikbolandet was probably begun in the 12th century, enlarged around the middle of the 14th century and further extended in the second half of the 15th century. Its altarpiece was created by Pehr Hörberg and signed in 1807. The medieval church of Å stands in ruins approximately 1.5 kilometres south of the present-day church. The church ruins were partially restored in the 1970s and are registered as a permanent archaeological monument.

The present-day church of Tåby was inaugurated in 1789, while its tower was not completed until 1819. The altarpiece depicts the rending of the rocks at Christ’s death and was painted by Pehr Hörberg in 1796. Kuddby Church was rebuilt in 1828 during the reign of King Charles XIV John and restored in 1901. Its organ was built by Sven and Erik Nordström in 1882; it has grey-painted surfaces and gilded ornaments.

Hylinge Oppgård offers another perspective on the past: the agricultural museum was established on an old family farm and has origins dating back to the 18th century. Hylinge Oppgård welcomes groups by prior arrangement, while the exhibitions are open from 1 May to 1 October.
