Kögenäs: Village by Stora Rängen

Kögenäs is a village on Lake Stora Rängen in Östergötland. Its preserved village centre and a few traces of local history make it an interesting place for travellers looking for a quiet rural base in the Linköping area. However, a holiday rental in Kögenäs can only be assessed based on its actual address, amenities and availability. Its lakeside location does not establish that there is a publicly accessible swimming beach or boat rental.

Village Centre and Högåsa

After the land consolidation reforms, the houses of five farms remained in the village centre. This gives Kögenäs a tangible connection to local history. Högåsa has been carefully restored and maintained. One documented village walk ran from the soldier’s croft Högåsa to the centre of Kögenäs and attracted about 40 participants. This one-off event does not mean there is a permanently signposted tour or a guarantee of access to the interior. If you want to explore the village, use public paths and respect private property.

Jonas Petri Kjörling was born in Kögenäs in 1630. In 1653, he became a student of Östgöta Nation at Uppsala University and later a professor in Dorpat. His biography is another historical connection to the village, but does not indicate that a museum or related exhibition is open today. It can add to an exploration of local history without implying that there is a specific visitor attraction.

Stora Rängen and the Wider Area

Kögenäs is on Stora Rängen. In the wider region, the roughly 45-kilometre Rängen Runt hiking route goes around the lake. The Sätravallen–Vårdnäs section of the Östgötaleden trail is also in the wider area. These regional trails are not necessarily directly accessible from the village centre or from every holiday rental. Use an up-to-date map to choose your starting point and check your return journey before planning a day hike.

In two past winters, members of the Linköpings Flygklubb were able to land on the ice of Stora Rängen near Kögenäs. This is a notable historical observation, but explicitly not an indication of current safe ice conditions or permission for visitors. For a stay by the lake, follow current local information and do not infer that the lake can be used based on what happened in past winters.
