Hällestad: Forest, Mining and Church Art
Accommodation in Hällestad
The old coniferous forest of the Hällestads-Torp nature reserve, the mining history around Storgruvan and Hällestads kyrka show different sides of Hällestad. Nature and hiking, the history of iron extraction or church architecture can be at the heart of a stay. These specific themes give you a good starting point when deciding what you would like to discover in Hällestad.
Hiking in the Hällestads-Torp nature reserve
Hällestads-Torp is an old coniferous forest with a natural, ancient woodland character. The hiking trail crosses dry rock slabs dotted with gnarled pines and passes through damper spruce forest. There, dense carpets of moss and lichen cover the ground. The contrast between dry rock and damp, mossy forest makes the vegetation and terrain part of the nature experience: you encounter not only different trees, but also clearly changing sections of forest.
Visitors are welcome to explore the area on their own. There are no car parks or other visitor facilities in the nature reserve. This is important to bear in mind when planning: the area is intended for independent exploration.
Storgruvan and the mining history
In the 17th century, Storgruvan was Hällestad’s largest iron mine; its heyday came in the second half of the century. The mine therefore has a clear place in the town’s industrial history. The Storgruvefältet is surrounded by hiking trails leading to various mines. This offers a different focus for hiking than the forest at Hällestads-Torp: here, the trails to the mines and the mining history take centre stage.
Hällestads Storgruva is about one kilometre long and can be visited as a shorter hike. A reconstruction of Storgruvan’s Trähäst stands south of the Storgruvefältet. At the Gruvstugan near Storgruvan, you will find a scenic rest stop as well as maps and brochures with information about the hiking trail. The Gruvstuga itself is a simple log-built hut with an attic. These different details offer several points of interest: a hike, the history of the mine and a specific historic building.
Hällestads kyrka: neo-Gothic design and art
Hällestads kyrka was built between 1893 and 1895 from red, machine-made bricks, following plans by architect Gustaf Petterson. Its design was typically neo-Gothic for the period. The construction period, building material and style make the church a subject in its own right, alongside the forest and mining. There is also a named work of art: artist Johan Krouthén painted the choir’s star vault. In this way, the church combines architectural history with a specific artistic detail.
Choose the right focus for your stay
For families or other travel groups with different interests, it can help to choose a shared main theme first: hiking through the forest, mining history, or architecture and art. There is also a clear difference between the hiking options: Hällestads-Torp features dry rock slabs and damper spruce forest, while the trails at the Storgruvefältet lead to various mines, and Storgruva can be visited as a shorter hike. When looking for a holiday apartment in Hällestad, you can match your preferred focus to your travel plans.
