Sikfors combines the history of the Pite River with a distinctive river landscape and remarkable traces of technological history. The area is located at the last rapid on the Pite River before it reaches the sea. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Sikfors can therefore plan their stay around different interests: culture and historic buildings, fishing and canoeing, or hiking along the river all have an equal place.

Bridge, Power Station and Village History

One of the most striking structures is the 155-metre-long railway bridge in Sikfors. Under a government decision made in 2007, it is a listed state heritage monument. It is also regarded as one of the country's most remarkable bridges from both a technical and aesthetic perspective. Its size and status as a heritage monument make it a natural focal point for anyone interested in civil engineering and regional history.

The old Sikfors power station also tells the story of the region's development. It was commissioned in 1912 and was Norrbotten's first major power station at the time. Its history is also connected with the electrification of industry in Norrbotten. The settlement history offers an even older perspective on Sikfors: in the Middle Ages, the fishing and farming village was founded on a low-lying terrace by the river. At Gåstjärnheden on the eastern side of the river, some of the numerous archaeological remains have been marked and signposted.

River Landscapes and Active Days

The river valley near Sikfors has steep slopes descending to the riverbed. Today, the sandy heathlands on both sides of the river are largely covered with pine forest. In the Sikfors FVO area, the Pite River is almost untouched by hydropower, allowing it to retain its natural character and diverse animal and plant life. The Pite River – Sikfors FVO area also includes a fire pit and a wind shelter.

The fishing area offers anglers a wide variety of options: salmon, trout, whitefish, grayling, pike and perch can be caught in the Pite River. In Sikfors, fishing is possible both in the Pite River and in its own stocked lakes. Those who prefer to experience the river from the water can rent stable canoes for up to three adults, with a maximum load of 300 kilograms.

The Solanderleden Trail also passes through Sikfors. The blue section of the trail runs through the village, while the Solanderleden currently ends at the suspension bridge in Sikfors. This allows you to add a hiking experience to your travel plans without losing sight of the village's cultural and river-related attractions.
