Vuollerim combines a distinctive river landscape with nature experiences, regional history and traces of human settlement. The confluence of the Stora Luleälven and Lilla Luleälven rivers is located in Vuollerim Ecopark. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home as a base can tailor their stay to their own interests: choosing between short and longer hiking trails, plant observation, archaeological discoveries and insights into the history of the area.

River Landscape and Special Plants

The Vuollerimravinerna nature reserve features a varied forest landscape on the steep slopes of the Luleälven. Deeply cut stream ravines give the area its distinctive character. The ecopark also has sun-exposed lichen heaths where rare fungi such as the Goliatmusseron, Smultronkantarell and Taigataggsvamp can be found.

Another natural attraction is Tussilagolunden, a deciduous-forest ravine in Vuollerim. Coltsfoot grows there, a plant that is unusual in the inland areas of Norrbotten. A boardwalk and signs lead to the site where the plant can be found. Tussilagolunden can be reached by following the signs from the Porsi power station; there is a car park nearby. This precise guidance helps you plan a day in nature purposefully, without combining different excursion destinations into one circular route.

Hiking, Water and Excursions

Vuollerim has five hiking trails of varying difficulty. The shortest trail is 2 km long, while the longest is just over 4 km. All the hiking trails begin at the northern end of Gästgivarestigen. This allows you to choose between different trail lengths and levels of difficulty when planning your day. Spegeldammen was built to prevent the water levels beside Vuollerim from falling and is considered a popular destination for excursions on warm summer days.

The ecopark also combines nature and the past. A boardwalk leads to the archaeological sites of settlements where people lived 6,000 years ago. Several signs provide information about the archaeological discoveries in the area. This makes it possible for families with different interests to enjoy a varied stay: while some explore the landscape and plants, the history of the area offers another way to experience the surroundings.

Experience History in the Area

Gamla Telegrafen was built in 1904 as a single-storey wooden building for the telephone exchange and as a residence. The well-preserved building dates from around the turn of the century and is considered an important link in Vuollerim’s history. Objects and photographs from various periods have been collected there. To arrange a visit to the museum at Gamla Telegrafen, you can contact the Vuollerim local heritage association.

The church in Vuollerim is also part of the local history. It was inaugurated in 1958 and houses the altarpiece “Livets väg” by Lennart Segerstråle. Boströmsgården, formerly called Ostigården, dates from the mid-19th century. Those interested in everyday history and older buildings will therefore find several different points of interest in Vuollerim.
