Haparanda offers unusual contrasts for planning a trip: in the archipelago, long sandy beaches, shallow sea bays and lush deciduous forests meet a species-rich flora and fauna. At the same time, the town tells stories of railways, trade, wartime history and a striking modern church. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Haparanda can therefore tailor their stay to their own interests, choosing between nature experiences, excursions on the water and cultural discoveries.

Nature in the Haparanda Archipelago

The Haparanda Archipelago is an obvious focal point for anyone who wants to spend time outdoors. The landscape encompasses a variety of natural settings: long sandy beaches, shallow sea bays and deciduous forests shape the area. In addition, there is a species-rich flora and fauna. The archipelago offers opportunities for outdoor recreation, hiking, birdwatching, swimming and other nature experiences. Depending on your interests, you can spend the day relaxing by the water, observing nature or going on a hike.

In summer, excursion boats operate to both islands in the Haparanda Archipelago. The boats depart from Cementkajen in the centre of Haparanda. This fixed starting point is useful for planning your day if you want to combine an excursion on the water with further impressions of the town.

Historical Traces Between the Railway Station, Trade and Church

Haparanda’s history can also be seen in specific buildings. The railway station building was constructed in 1917 and is one of the largest rural railway stations in Sweden. It was designed by Folke Zettervall. During the First World War, Haparanda and the railway leading eastwards were of international political significance. In the cemetery, a memorial to invalids inaugurated in 1919 commemorates 205 Austrians, 11 Germans and 3 Turks who died during the invalid transports in the First World War.

Another historic stop is the H.M. Hermanson Trading House. It was built in 1832 and is one of the best-preserved commercial buildings in northern Sweden. The shop in the building has been located in the same house since 1905. For your visit, it is important to take the special opening arrangements into account: the trading house may be open when Swedish flags are flying at the door, for tours booked in advance and during special events such as a Christmas market.

Haparanda Church creates a distinctly different architectural accent. After the old church burned down in the 1960s, architect Bengt Larsson designed a modern church in its place. Its exterior walls are clad in copper plates, which have turned almost black due to the climatic conditions. An audio guide is available in Finnish, Swedish, English and German. This allows you to learn about the church and its design in the language that suits you.

The Right Base for Your Trip

When looking for a holiday apartment in Haparanda, it is worth first deciding on your preferred travel rhythm. The key question is whether you prefer varied days with several focal points or a more relaxed stay with individual activities. You can then choose accommodation in Haparanda as the basis for planning your days according to your personal preferences.
