Bredsel at Storforsen: Nature, History and Trails
Accommodation in Bredsel
Bredsel lies at the foot of Storforsen on the Piteälven River. The village combines a powerful river landscape with nature trails, regional history and living traditions. Those planning a trip to northern Sweden will find various opportunities here for immersive nature experiences, peaceful walks and cultural discoveries.
Storforsen: A River Landscape of Impressive Dimensions
The Storforsen Nature Reserve has wooden walkways and hiking trails. Storforsen stretches over 5 kilometres and has a total fall of 82 metres. These dimensions shape the character of the area and make the rapids a central attraction around Bredsel. The nature reserve was established on 1 November 1971 and expanded in 1997.
To reach Storforsen, follow Route 374 or a turn-off from this road. There is a large car park on site. Parking spaces for visitors with a special parking permit for people with reduced mobility are located beyond the barrier, closer to the rapids. Large parts of the nature reserve are accessible to people with reduced mobility.
Nature Trails, Views and Wildlife
The riverside forest in the nature reserve has a primeval appearance and is home to a diverse range of plant and animal life. The Piteälven is home to otters and the black-and-white white-throated dipper. For nature observation, it is worth allowing time for the surrounding area instead of limiting your visit to the view of the rapids.
Another option is Upplevelseskogen Bredselsberget, an easy-to-walk nature trail. From higher up on Bredselsberget, there is a view of Storforsen. The mountain also has a shelter and barbecue areas with benches and windbreaks. Numerous potholes created by stones, water and friction can be found around Döda fallet. The water-polished rock surfaces and the wild ravines cut into the bedrock give this section of the landscape its own distinctive character. Döda fallet was formed when the old riverbed was drained.
Forestry, Timber Floating and Local History
Storforsen preserves not only nature but also traces of working life and industry. The cultural heritage area contains charcoal-burning pits, tar kilns, cabin foundations, cabins used by forest workers and timber floaters, woodcutters and stonebreakers, as well as excavated channels. The Skogsbruksmuseet in Storforsen opened in 1972 and documents the development of forestry up to mechanisation in the 1950s. The museum includes a timber floater’s cabin and a boathouse.
The Flottningsmuseet opened in 1992. It covers the importance of the river for the transport and floating of loose timber. The Forestry and Timber-Floating Museum also provides insights into the daily lives and working methods of forestry and timber-floating workers in earlier times. This allows a trip to Storforsen to be combined with a closer look at the use of the river and the history of the region.
Chapel, Baking Traditions and Events
At Storforsens kapell, a panoramic window overlooking the mighty rapids serves as the altarpiece. The municipality of Älvsbyn offers wedding ceremonies there. To visit Storforsens kapell, you should contact the reception of Hotell Storforsen. Bredsel’s local traditions are also part of the travel experience: at Bredsels bagarstuga, Mjukkaka and other bread are often baked at certain times of the year.
Byadagen is organised by Bredsels bygdeförening every two years at the beginning of August. Storforsen hosts a cultural day every year. If you would like to plan your trip around an event or baking in the bagarstuga, you should check the relevant dates before making your plans. In summer, Kaffestugan in the Storforsen Nature Reserve serves meals, coffee, pastries and ice cream every day.
