Discover Bergkvara: Seafaring, Art and Trails
Accommodation in Bergkvara
Bergkvara brings maritime history, art and waterside trails together in a varied destination. At the Bergkvara Sjöfartsmuseum, photographs and objects tell the story of the importance of eel fishing since the Middle Ages, as well as pilotage and lighthouse services. The coast also shapes the experience: the museum is housed in a century-old harbour warehouse with sweeping views of the sea.
Maritime History and Architecture
In the basement of the Sjöfartsmuseet is a fully equipped boatbuilding workshop. It complements the stories of fishing and seafaring with the craft of boatbuilding. The museum thus brings together different aspects of maritime history: working on the water, navigating the coast and building boats.
Bergkvara’s architectural history also offers striking details. The Höglundska huset was relocated to Bergkvara Hembygdspark in 1946. Bergkvara kapell was built in 1958 to designs by architect Sigvard Ullén. Its high walls are somewhat reminiscent of medieval fortified churches—a carefully worded resemblance that gives the kapell its own distinctive architectural accent.
Art and Culture in the Town
Kulturmagasinet is housed in warehouse buildings belonging to a shipowner’s estate dating from the mid-19th century. It comprises three studios, a printmaking workshop and an art gallery. In summer, in collaboration with Torsås Municipality, it offers a wide range of art and culture courses for beginners and advanced participants. Its seasonal focus is useful to bear in mind when planning: the courses are part of the summer programme, not a year-round programme.
Bergkvara Konsthall also presents exhibitions featuring works by professional artists. Together with the historic sites, this creates a cultural offering that appeals to a range of interests—from maritime history and architecture to art and practical courses.
Hiking and Coastal Trails
“I sjöfartens spår-Bergkvara” is a walking route through Bergkvara’s maritime history. Information boards at the stops provide additional details about the sites. Another way to explore the area is the KS8 section of Kalmarsundsleden: it runs for 14.2 kilometres from Stufvenäs to Bergkvara. Lionsleden, meanwhile, runs between Torsås and Bergkvara along a former railway embankment and was converted into a walking and cycling path in 2010. The routes therefore differ in both theme and course; the start and end points and length of the KS8 section are clearly specified.
At Badudden, there are basic changing cabins, with a walking trail running nearby. A boat and canoe route also follows the coast between Bergkvara and the Örarevet Nature Reserve. Bergkvara guest harbour is located in Torsås, close to nature and services. For days spent by the water, Garpens Fyrplats is another destination: the boat trip from the marina in Bergkvara aboard the Gustav takes about 15 minutes. The service is weather-dependent; check the current departure times in advance. If you are planning to climb the lighthouse, also check whether access will be possible at the time of your visit.
When looking for a holiday rental in Bergkvara, you can start by considering which themes you want to shape your stay: maritime history and art, walking trails or a trip along the coast. This helps you choose where to stay based on the experiences that interest you most.
