Ödeshög combines remarkable cultural history with diverse experiences in nature. In the town centre stands Ödeshög Church, which originally dates from the 12th century and is one of the three surviving Romanesque churches with an eastern tower in Östergötland. In the surrounding area, hikes, bike tours, trips to Lake Vättern and historical discoveries come together. This makes the town a suitable base for a trip on which you want to combine different day plans.

Cultural history in the town centre and surrounding area

Ödeshög Church is centrally located in the town. A runestone is built into its north side, while the wrought-iron churchyard gates bear the inscription “ODESHOG” and the year 1792. The gates are considered unusual and valuable from a cultural and historical perspective. The eastern tower is also considered an unusually well-preserved medieval structure. Anyone interested in older architectural forms, inscriptions and regional history will find several details in one historic place here.

Further excursions lead into the area surrounding Ödeshög. The Rök Runestone was erected in the 9th century by a man named Varin in memory of his deceased son. There is a permanent exhibition next to the Rök Runestone. At the Alvastra Pile Dwelling, remains of a settlement were discovered in a marsh called Dags mosse; the finds date back to the Stone Age, around 5,000 years ago. Ödeshög’s local heritage centre was established in 1935 on the town’s former fairground and adds a locally shaped perspective to the historical picture.

Omberg, hiking trails and tours on the water

In the area surrounding Ödeshög, Ekopark Omberg offers various opportunities for active days. A 0.7-kilometre beech forest trail is suitable for people with visual impairments and accessible by wheelchair, pram or walking frame. There is also a 27-kilometre circular hiking trail around the mountain, which forms part of Östgötaleden. In Ödeshög, further hiking trails range from short walks to full-day routes. They lead through forests, across slopes and along the clear waters of Lake Vättern.

There are also several routes to choose from by bicycle. In Ekopark Omberg, Cykelled Norr starts and ends at Ommaborgen, while Cykelled Söder starts and ends at Stocklycke. Ödeshög’s cycling map also provides information about local cycling routes, repair points and worthwhile stops along the roads. From Lake Vättern, Omberg can be explored by kayak or canoe; this allows you to reach caves and small bays that are inaccessible from land.

For further experiences on the water, Visjön is located nearby. Two motorless rowing boats can be rented there for half-day or full-day fishing trips. You can fish for perch, pike and roach in the lake, for which a fishing licence is required. Those who prefer a guided perspective can find year-round booking options with Wettersaga for full-day tours and shorter guided excursions at Omberg, Alvastra, the Rök Runestone and Lake Vättern.

Planning excursions and choosing a suitable accommodation location

For travelling by car, Ödeshög’s direct connection to the E4 is relevant. Exit 106 takes you to the central parts of the town within a few minutes. Maps and brochures about excursion destinations in the municipality and elsewhere in Östergötland are available at Ödeshög Library; local tourist information is also available in the entrance area of Rasta/Preem on the E4.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you prefer the town centre, with its cultural history, as a base or whether you want to focus your days more on excursions in the surrounding area. For a varied trip, nature, water and history can be combined without every day having to have the same focus. Klockargårdsängen offers a playground, barbecue area, boules court, disc golf course and skate park for this purpose. The disc golf course has nine holes and winds through the parkland.

Another regional speciality is Narr Chocolate. Since 1993, the family-run company has specialised in coating nuts, fruits and berries with chocolate and yoghurt. At the Narr Chocolate Shop, you can find more than 300 varieties of high-quality confectionery to fill yourself, as well as a view of the production area. If you would like to compare other destinations in addition to Ödeshög, you can also include Ramkvilla and Gräsberg in your further travel plans.
