Discover Frösön: Holiday apartment between culture and mountain landscapes

Frösön is the largest island in Lake Storsjön. The island combines traces of a long history with trails through forests and shoreline landscapes, views over the Storsjöbygden region, and various opportunities for walks, cycling tours and cultural discoveries.

Culture and history

Frösö kyrka stands on Hov, a pre-Christian site of worship and assembly. Its construction probably began at the end of the 12th century. A reliquary from the 13th century stands in a niche in the chancel. The Kyrkstigen also draws on this history: the 3 km-long, easy-to-walk trail presents the history of Frösö kyrka and Hov farm, which dates back to the Iron Age more than 1,000 years ago.

Sommarhagen is another site of cultural and historical importance. The artists’ home opened as a museum in 1947 and is one of Sweden’s best-preserved artists’ homes from around the turn of the century. Sommarhagen can be reached from central Östersund by regional bus route 4.

The Frösö Runestone is a particularly distinctive historical trace. It is Sweden’s northernmost erected runestone and also Jämtland’s only known runestone. The stone states that Östman, Gudfast’s son, had a bridge built across the sound and Christianized Jämtland.

Landscape

Frösötornet stands at Frösön’s highest point, 468 metres above sea level. The 19-metre-high observation tower offers views over the Storsjöbygden region and the mountain landscapes. Around the tower there are nature trails with viewpoints and barbecue facilities.

Bynäset also leads through a distinctive shoreline and forest landscape. A trail just under 7 km long runs through varied forest along the shores of Lake Storsjön. At Bynäset there are trails for walking, running and cycling, as well as a shallow bathing cove with a pebble beach.

Trails and activities

Several shorter trails provide access to different parts of Frösön. Mjällestigen is approximately 2.5 km long and runs mainly along roads and easy-to-walk trails. Stengårdsstigen is slightly more than 3 km long and is mostly easy to walk; it leads to one of the preserved village roads on Frösön and provides information about Frösön as well as archaeological remains from the Iron Age.

For longer cycling tours, the Frösön runt mountain bike route is available, with a length of approximately 30 km. It combines technical trails with gravel roads. Downhill cycling is available on Östberget. The S:t Olavsleden pilgrimage route leads from Östersund to Frösön island.

Östersund-Frösö Golfklubb has a varied, open parkland and woodland course on a south-facing slope with views of Lake Storsjön and the Jämtland mountains.

Getting there and local places

Frösötornet is approximately 350 metres from a bus stop; a road leads all the way to the tower.

Frösö hembygdsgård is home to Café Stocke Titt, located in an old captain’s farm. From there, there are views of the mountains and the lake. At Tages Konditori & Kök, you can try Frösökyssar.
