Berg: Nature and Trails at Hoverberget
Accommodation in Berg
At Hoverberget, Berg reveals a striking natural side: steep slopes, sheer rock faces, caves and forests shaped by a wide variety of plant and animal species define the nature reserve. Hoverberget is also protected as a Natura 2000 site. If you enjoy taking a closer look at the outdoors, you’ll find varied landscapes and trails here, each offering a different perspective on the mountain.
Rock Faces, Gorge and Cave
Rämnan is a 500-metre-long gorge on the western side of Hoverberget. Its sheer rock faces rise up to 25 metres high. A trail runs through the gorge and offers impressive views. These dimensions give the landscape a tangible scale: over a short distance, the narrow gorge alternates with views of towering rock faces.
Another special feature is the 170-metre-long Hoverbergsgrottan, described as Scandinavia’s largest fissure cave. The first section is accessible thanks to lighting and sturdy stairs. Check seasonal access before travelling. This lets you factor a cave visit into your day’s plans without assuming it is an experience available year-round.
Trails Around Hoverberget
There are several trails on and around Hoverberget, with direction and distance signs as well as orientation maps. The nine-kilometre Hoverbergsleden runs along the foot of the mountain. The approximately six-kilometre Kyrkstigen passes through part of the nature reserve. The distances offer a clear basis for planning: Hoverbergsleden is the longer of the two routes described, while Kyrkstigen combines its route with a stretch through the protected area.
You can also reach the summit on foot: well-marked trails lead up from Hoverbergsgrottan. At the top, an observation tower offers sweeping views of the surroundings; the tower is open in summer. The seasonal Trollstigen is listed as being open from late May to early October. Check opening conditions before visiting. This helps you plan hikes, a cave visit and the views around the day’s intended activities.
Lake, Swimming Area and Summer Fika
The Balviken swimming area is located on Lake Storsjön. Facilities include a sandy beach, a grassy shore, changing rooms and a barbecue area. This is a different way to spend time outdoors than following the trails at Hoverberget: you can make a day by the water the main event or treat the swimming area as a separate activity alongside hikes and nature experiences.
In summer, the Toppstugan on Hoverberget serves waffles, coffee and homemade fika. This seasonal offering makes a good break during a day focused on Hoverberget’s landscape. Strandgården is listed as renting out two kayaks; check in advance whether they are available.
Bergs Kyrka and Pärlstigen
Bergs Kyrka was inaugurated on 9 July 1797 and is one of the largest churches in Jämtland. Nearby, Pärlstigen follows the shoreline through a varied landscape. The trail was inaugurated in 2023. The church and shore path offer a different focus from the gorge, cave and summit: here, a visit to a historic building combines with a walk along the water.
When looking for a holiday rental in Berg, the mix of experiences you want can be a helpful starting point. If you mainly want to explore trails, rocky landscapes and the cave, Hoverberget and its hiking options take centre stage. If you’d like to include an outing by the water or a visit to the church, you can also consider these interests when choosing your destination.
