Storlien combines winter activities, mountain scenery and a remarkable railway history. The station is located 592 metres above sea level, making it Sweden’s highest railway station. The railway line between Östersund and Trondheim opened in 1882; the Bräcke–Storlien section continues towards Trondheim in Norway. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Storlien, you are choosing a destination where nature experiences, winter sports and historical discoveries can be combined.

Many opportunities for days on the slopes

The alpine ski area in Storlien has nine ski lifts and 23 runs. In addition, you will find seven cross-country ski loops on the northern side of the railway line, covering a total of just over 40 kilometres. On the southern side, there are five ski trails ranging from 2.5 to more than 16 kilometres in length. These different trail lengths help with planning: you can schedule shorter outings or make longer tours the focus of a winter day, without having to organise every experience in the same way.

Another option is the winter route from Storlien to Blåhammaren and Sylarna. From Blåhammaren, a 17-kilometre trail also leads towards Storlien and Storvallen. The historical side of winter sports is part of the destination as well: Storlien’s first ski lift, the Slalom lift, began operating in 1942.

Trails with history and panoramic views

Blomsterstigen was established in Storlien as early as 1890. The trail is believed to be Sweden’s first walking trail used for health and recreation purposes. This makes it not only an opportunity to spend time outdoors, but also a special part of the local history. A hiking trail in Storlien offers views of Snasahögarna, Sylarna and Stenfjället. These perspectives give your trip a clear landscape-focused character and suit anyone who wants to experience the mountains consciously alongside sporting activities.

The birdlife is also part of the character of the area. Storlien’s bird sanctuary includes wetlands, the larger Topptjärn pond, smaller pools and scattered mountain birch woodland. Those looking for a quieter way to spend the day can make this landscape a focus of its own, alternating impressions of moorland, bodies of water and birch woodland with the destination’s more active offerings.

Cycling trails and mountain lakes in summer

For active summer days, Storlien has eight different cycling trails: Sandtjärnsrundan, Ridstigen, Vindarnas Tempel, Skurdalsporten, Atlantleden, Lyxlinjen, Serpentinen Storlien and Smuggler’s Run. The cycling trails are often used together with hikers. The northern part of the cycling trail system is more family-friendly and can therefore provide important guidance when planning with children. This allows you to choose a route based on your preferred pace and how you feel that day, without having to limit yourself to a single type of activity.

You can rent canoes and paddle on the mountain lakes. This complements the trails and runs with a perspective from the water. What this means when choosing accommodation is that a holiday apartment or holiday house in Storlien is particularly well suited to a trip where you want to alternate between days skiing, hiking trails, cycling tours, mountain lakes and cultural and historical experiences.
