Discover Tvååker: Churches, the Viking Age and Excursions
Accommodation in Tvååker
Tvååker combines a multifaceted history with hiking trails, farms and regional experiences. Choosing the right place to stay begins with considering which of these impressions should be the focus of the trip.
Churches and traces of the Viking Age
The architectural history of Tvååker includes two churches of distinctly different ages. The present-day church was built in 1853 according to plans by the architect Johan Fredrik Åbom. Tvååker's old church, by contrast, dates from around the year 1200. Its tower was built in 1688; the church building was extended in the same year. This sequence makes the history of the churches a topic in its own right for anyone interested in medieval and later architectural periods.
Another historical feature is Tvååker's Viking Age burial ground. Investigations uncovered remains from 139 graves, including animal and human bones. Archaeologists also discovered three large ship settings and a ship-shaped mound. The burial ground gives Tvååker a distinctive cultural and historical character that can be clearly distinguished from the later church buildings.
Hiking trails with different characteristics
For active days, the Åkulla beech forests offer two options described in different ways. Skogsbostigen is considered the more challenging hiking trail and is associated with beautiful views of Hiaklitten. Älvasjöstigen is considered somewhat easier and suitable for prams. If you have different expectations for a hike, it is worth taking these two trail characteristics into account when planning your day.
Natural monuments are also part of the region's points of reference. There are ten natural monuments in Varberg Municipality, all of them oaks. They include trees in Tvååker and Lindberg, as well as an oak just north of Galtabäck. The individual locations each provide their own starting points for walks and discoveries, without requiring them to be combined into a single route.
Farms, crafts and regional experiences
Tvååker's local heritage farm is called Lille-Bengts. Olof and Alma Andersson were its last owners and lived there from 1923 to 1981. The farm was then donated to the Tvååker local heritage association. The story of Lille-Bengts is also conveyed in a film featuring the account of Rolands, Olof's nephew.
Sonjas Veranda offers further insights into local history. It is located in a house built in 1889 that originally served as a railway hotel. For a quieter break, Eriksgård offers a large garden area for walking and relaxing, with several places to sit. Ästad Vingård grows organic grapes and produces its own wines; its day-hiking package includes a car park with charging stations.
Öströö Fårfarm is also considered a lively organic farm and a popular excursion destination. The farm shop sells lamb meat and homemade lamb specialities, including smoked leg of lamb, cold-smoked sausages, salami, barbecue sausages, pâtés and lamb meatballs. Boats can be rented at Öströö Fårfarm and Öströö Slott, and fishing is possible on Lake Ottersjön. Over the years, the farm has hosted various musical performances.
