Mästocka combines preserved heathland, ancient forests, marshes and trails by the water to create a destination for anyone who wants not just to look at nature, but to experience it along a variety of routes. The area is particularly diverse thanks to the combination of Mästocka ljunghed heathland, Björsjön and the Blåalt and Rönnö nature reserves. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can base your choice on whether hiking, observing the landscape or spending days by the lake should be the main focus.

Heathland and hiking trails

Mästocka ljunghed heathland has been preserved since the time when heathland stretched far inland from the coast. Heathland areas have also been preserved in the forest around Mästocka. This makes it possible to discover a landscape here that consists not only of forest, but is complemented by open heathland areas.

The 2.3-kilometre blue-marked Björsjörundan trail runs across the heathland. A longer hiking option is the Hallandsleden, which passes through the Mästocka ljunghed nature reserve and runs along Björsjön. Those who want to combine different walking routes will find various starting points for planning their trip, without having to experience everything in the same way.

Forests, marshes and traces of earlier land use

The nature reserves in the surrounding area also have different features. Blåalt is an ancient, untouched forest consisting mainly of oaks and beeches. Near the hiking trail, the stone remains of an old pig enclosure have been preserved. Such traces add a historical dimension to the nature experience, without the visit depending on a single building or exhibition.

Rönnö covers a large area of untouched marshland and ancient natural forest. Deciduous forests, mixed forests, coniferous forests and swamp forests, along with several different types of marshland, lie side by side there. In Rönnö’s beech forest, stone walls covered in green moss bear witness to the former enclosure of farm areas and the keeping of animals out. For families, this combination of forest, marshland and visible traces in the landscape can provide an opportunity to combine a hike with discoveries of their own.

There are two hiking trails in Rönnö nature reserve: a 5.3-kilometre yellow loop and a 6.2-kilometre white loop. The two stated distances make it easier to choose according to the desired length of the day’s outing.

Björsjön and the Hallandsleden

Björsjön in Mästocka is a beautifully situated, family-friendly lake with a sandy beach next to the Mästocka Ljunghed nature reserve. The lake therefore adds another travel idea to the hiking landscape: a day by the water can follow a trail through the heathland or along the lake.

The Simlångsdalen–Mästocka section of the Hallandsleden ends at Mästocka campsite next to the bathing area. The section can therefore be combined with time at the bathing area at Mästocka campsite when planning a trip. The campsite has a shelter, a fire pit with firewood and a compost toilet. There is also a bathing spot with a jetty and shower.
