Särdal can be explored through two distinct themes: the history of the windmill and the open coastal landscape. Särdals Kvarn represents milling history, a café and a mill shop; the Särdal nature reserve features coastal pastures and striking geological formations. Hiking and cycling offer further perspectives. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by considering whether your outings are likely to focus more on culture, refreshments, outdoor activity or coastal nature.

Mill history and a striking landmark

Särdals Kvarn was built in 1890 and has been a listed building since 1980. In front of the mill stands an iron sculpture by Stig Dillberg depicting Don Quixote on a rearing horse. Alongside the mill’s architecture, the sculpture makes a striking artistic statement. Särdals Lifräddningsstation also offers a historical point of reference: it was built in 1908. The two buildings thus represent different chapters in Särdal’s history.

The country café at Särdals Kvarn serves lunch dishes, hearty sandwiches and fika. The spacious, Falun-red mill shop offers delicacies, home furnishings, antiques, vintage items, high-quality toys and art. This makes it possible to combine a look at the listed building with a refreshment stop or a browse around the shop. The selection ranges from food and delicacies to homeware, older pieces and art—its own focus alongside the architecture and sculpture.

Coastal pastures and geological formations

The Särdal nature reserve encompasses open coastal pastures with striking geological formations. The reserve begins at the southern end of the sandy beach. The landscape offers a different focus from the mill culture: open spaces and geological forms shape the view of this part of Särdal. You can reach the nature reserve by public transport via the “Särdals kvarn” stop and a gravel path leading towards the sea.

Routes, getting there and choosing your holiday apartment

One way to get to the mill is to take bus route 350 from Halmstad; the stop is right next to Särdals Kvarn. The mill also features along the Steninge–Haverdal section of the hiking trail: after Steninge, the route follows the cycle path to Särdals Kvarn, where it turns onto the road to Skallkroken harbour. Cyclists can stop at the windmill in Särdal while riding the Kattegattleden and visit a café and farm shop. Hiking, cycling and travelling by bus thus offer different ways to reach the mill and explore the landscape.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Särdal, you can start by considering how you would like to spend your days. Would you like the history of the mill, café and shop to play an important role, or are you mainly drawn to the nature reserve and its coastal pastures? For active days, the hiking trail section described above and a stop along the Kattegattleden are also different options to consider. Once you have prioritised these interests, it is easier to choose the outings that suit your stay.
