När – Nature Trails, Lighthouse and Historic Churches

När appeals to travellers who want to combine landscapes, culture and active days. Between flat coastal scenery, historic buildings and varied trails, different travel ideas take shape: you can plan a nature and culture tour, discover a 19th-century lighthouse or combine a longer hike with views and birdwatching. There are also two birdwatching towers on either side of the Närsån estuary where it meets the sea in Lausviken. The church of När also tells the story of a long building history. The tower was expanded around the middle of the 13th century with a clearly recognisable defensive function. Around 1300, the Romanesque choir and nave were replaced by corresponding Gothic-style structures. Travellers interested in church architecture and medieval development can incorporate these details specifically into their itinerary without focusing their stay exclusively on hiking.

Trails for short and longer excursions

The 5.5-kilometre Linné Trail is a nature and culture trail following in the footsteps of Carl Linnaeus. It begins at the Sockenmagasin by the church of När, where parking is also available. This clear starting point makes day planning easier when you want to combine a set route with a cultural starting point. Another option is the 4-kilometre hike between the church of När and the church of Lau. It partly follows the Linné Trail and therefore offers a different focus from the longer circular trail along the Närsån.

This selection is useful for families or travel groups with different interests, because not every day has to be structured in the same way: a cultural walk can be followed by a nature trail, while the Närsakarleden offers more space for views, the river mouth and birdwatching. The distances of 4, 5.5 and approximately 11 kilometres give you a concrete basis for setting the pace and scope of your excursions yourself.
