Svabensverk combines the history of an ironworks with art, marked trails and a landscape of streams and lakes. Those planning a trip with a variety of ideas for each day will find opportunities here for culture, walks, cycling, swimming, fishing and long-distance ice skating. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Svabensverk, you can therefore first consider whether your trip should focus more on historical discoveries, trails through nature or activities on the water.

Ironworks History and Distinctive Local Features

The Svabensverk ironworks was founded at the beginning of the 19th century by Anton Svab, a mining master from Falun. Its industrial past can also be seen in the built remains: beside the stream, the remains of the Övre Hammaren dam and structures from the former forge are visible. Slag stone has become a distinctive feature of Svabensverk.

Another distinctive feature is the church of Svabensverk. It was originally built as a school and converted into a church in 1884–1885. The bell tower houses Kristineklockan, a 170-kilogram bell considered to be the first bell imported from Sheffield to Sweden. The church is located directly beside National Road 50 at the entrance to the village. If you are coming from the direction of Falun, it is on the left-hand side of the road.

The Bruksrundan is suitable for getting your bearings. This walk leads through Svabensverk, with signs providing information about the history and nature of the area. This makes it possible to learn about the local history not only through individual buildings, but also through the connection between the landscape and its former uses.

Art and Trails Between the Village and the Landscape

The Konst i Svaben exhibition is centred on the nature-rich Kolhusudden, which stretches through the Glitterdammen area in the middle of Svabensverk. Visitors can walk there in natural surroundings and view art by local residents and established artists. For your trip planning, this provides a cultural stop that combines a walk with artistic impressions. For Konst i Svaben, the opening in 2025 was scheduled for Midsummer Eve; the exhibition was supposed to remain open until the end of August.

There are also different points of interest for longer tours. The Blue Trail starts at the municipal hall in Svabensverk and follows the Bruksån westwards to a shelter at Amungen. The Yellow Trail follows the Bruksån back towards Svabensverk. The Västeråsen Route climbs a total of around 180 metres over a distance of 6 kilometres. Those who prefer a shorter local loop can include the Bruksrundan in their plans. The Pilgrimsleden passes through or by Svabensverk.

Lakes, Swimming Area and Seasonal Ideas

Several large, elongated lakes around Svabensverk are used for long-distance ice skating. The skating takes place on natural lake-ice surfaces, which change with the weather and wind. The local community association rents out several pairs of long-distance skates. For a winter trip, it is therefore advisable to take the conditions and the desired activity into account when planning each day.

During the warmer season, the Hämmen–Svabensverk swimming area offers a small sandy beach. Fishing permits are sold at Lake Hämmen at Bockahästen. A hiking trail marked in yellow and red also passes the historic summer pasture hut Gäddviksbo and the Trögabäcken farmyard. Svabensverk and Hämmenåsen have significant natural-scientific, cultural-historical and landscape-aesthetic values.
