Holiday apartment in Bollnäs – Iron Age, nature and the Ljusnan Valley

Bollnäs makes history visible at specific sites and combines it with nature and water experiences. On Onbacken in central Bollnäs, the remains of a complete Iron Age settlement environment dating from approximately AD 100 to 500 have been preserved. Information boards provide insights into life at the time and enable a self-guided tour of the Iron Age remains. Bollnäs Church was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. Alongside Vadstena Abbey Church, it contains Sweden’s largest collection of medieval church sculptures.

Culture and history

In Växbo, Trolldalen preserves one of the best-preserved environments from the heyday of flax processing. In summer, guided tours of the preserved flax drying house are offered there; Trolldalen is open at all times. Växbo Lin, one of Sweden’s few remaining linen weavers, is also located in Växbo. Visitors can see the ongoing linen production with its many mechanical looms. Guided factory tours show the process from raw material to finished product.

The Landabanan offers another historical experience: in summer, train rides take place with kolbullar, coffee service and music. At Bollnäs museum och konsthall, a centrally located art gallery, the exhibitions change throughout the year. Bollnäs museum also presents the history of the town. The Bollnäsbarnen exhibition explores the lives of children and young people in Bollnäs around the turn of the 20th century.

Bollnäs Folkets Park on Långnäs udde dates back to the 1920s. In summer, events featuring local and visiting artists take place there. Bollnästravet is also part of the town’s events programme and hosts around 40 trotting races per year.

For local transport, Bollnäs has four local bus routes. They run twice an hour during the daytime on weekdays.

Nature and trails

The Stora and Lilla Bolleberget area has a well-developed network of trails and ski tracks for hiking, running and cycling. The routes are between 1 and 17 km long. In the immediate surroundings south of Bollnäs, the Tjuvberget Nature Reserve is located by Lake Övre Herten. From the Tjuvberget car park, a winding trail of approximately 750 m leads to the summit. The Hälsingeleden passes the southern part of the nature reserve; there is a fire pit and firewood there.

Finnskogsriket is a natural and cultural area between Hälsingland, Gästrikland and Dalarna. The area has around 2,170 km of snowmobile and hiking trails, some of which are also suitable for bicycles. In Galvån Nature Reserve, the species-rich birdlife and the population of trout are particularly valuable. An easy trail follows the Galvån River between Galvsjön and Nyfors.

Water

Aboard the steamship S/S Warpen, visitors can experience Bollnäs and the Ljusnan Valley from the water. All S/S Warpen trips depart from the pier by the marina at Långnäs. For independent canoeing experiences, canoes can be rented at Sävstaås IP in Bollnäs and transported independently to a desired location. Canoes are also rented at Voxsjön in Prästnäset.
