Sörsjön combines river landscapes, lakes, mountains and remarkable culture into a destination offering many different experiences. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can choose their accommodation based on their planned daily activities: The focus may be on hiking, swimming, fishing, winter excursions or the history of the area. Sörsjön is therefore not limited to just one type of holiday.

Hiking, Cycling and Winter Experiences

A walking trail leads from Sörsjön up to Horrmundsåsen. Along the way, views open up over the village and the mountains to the west. Another hiking trail runs along the western side of the river from Sörsjön to Lövåssätern on the mountain side of Fulufjället. These two trails appeal to different preferences: The trail up to Horrmundsåsen connects the village with a panoramic experience, while the route to Lövåssätern leads more deeply into the mountain landscape.

Cyclists also have their own way of getting to know the area. Fulufjällstrampet is a recreational cycling tour around the Fulufjället mountain range and its national park. In winter, you can explore Sörsjön’s forests and mountains on skis or snowshoes. In addition, the snowmobile trails around Sörsjön extend for approximately 80 kilometres. One trail leads east and connects to the trails near Nornäs; snowmobiles can be rented in Sörsjön.

Lake, River and Nature Watching

Sörsjön’s picnic area is located in the centre of the village between Lake Kvickertjärn and Road 311. It has benches and tables, toilets, a bathing area, fishing waters, as well as a wind shelter with a barbecue area. Swimming is possible in Kvickertjärn near the picnic area. The bathing area also has toilets, a jetty and a diving tower with a wooden diving board. This makes it easy to include time by the water specifically in your daily plans.

Anglers will find one of the best running-water fishing areas in Dalarna County at the Fulan River. Sörsjön also has several stocked fishing waters with rainbow trout, trout or Arctic char. In spring, the riverbed fills with swans, geese and individual cranes for several weeks before the birds continue north. The cultural landscape around Sörsjön is also characterised by many hay barns along the river. Berries and mushrooms can be picked free of charge in nature.

Chapel, Bridge and Stories from Sörsjön

Sörsjön’s chapel is a special cultural destination. It was built in 1954 according to plans by the architect Sven A. Söderholm and was the first permanently established chapel in the area. At the same time, it is considered a very early example of Brutalism by national and international standards. Inside are three stained-glass windows designed by Folke Heybroek, depicting the three articles of faith.

The local history also includes Sörsjön’s suspension bridge, known as “Norra bron”, “Hängbron” and “Träbron”, which dates from 1924. Visitors can cross it on foot or cycle between the bridges in the village. At Sörsjön’s rest area next to Lake Kvickertjärn, there is also a statue of “Mors lilla Olle”. The Swedish children’s song is based on a true event from 1851 in Morbäckssätern.

The nearby Ejforsen power station was completed in 1917 and was one of the first village power stations in northern Dalarna. A road sign indicates the way there; it is visible when you drive south from Sörsjön. Those who want to combine exploring the area with a special activity can find shorter and longer tours through forest and mountain landscapes at Daltunet Husky in summer and winter. Since 1997, the company has offered dog-sledding tours as day trips from a farm in the village.

Accommodation and Travel Planning

When looking for accommodation in Sörsjön, it is worth first determining your personal priorities. For water activities, picnics and swimming, Kvickertjärn provides a clear point of reference. Hikers can plan the trails up to Horrmundsåsen or towards Lövåssätern, while in winter the choice is determined by skis, snowshoes and snowmobile trails. Dalatrafik route 318 serves the Sörsjön stop. This allows you to choose your holiday apartment or holiday home according to your preferred mix of nature, culture and activities, without reducing the area to just one type of holiday.
