Ludvika: Culture, Lakes and Historic Discoveries
Accommodation in Ludvika
Ludvika combines an impressive cultural history with walking trails, lakes and fascinating insights into Sweden’s industrial past. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can choose from a variety of ideas for each day: a tour through the town centre, a visit to historic buildings, a cycling tour around several lakes or an excursion on the water.
Experience Cultural History at Authentic Locations
One prominent landmark is Ludvika Ulrika Church. It was consecrated in 1752, is designed as a cruciform church and has a shingle-clad façade. The church is surrounded by lush greenery and the Old Cemetery. The Romboleden trail also leads to Ludvika: via Harnäs, it runs into the municipality, continues through Gammelgården to the town centre and on to Ludvika Ulrika Church.
Ludvika gammelgård is home to 38 buildings. The site is divided into two museums: Bergsmansgården and the Mine Museum. Öbergska bergsmansgården dates back to the 16th century and stands at its original location. The Mine Museum is considered the world’s first open-air industrial history museum. This gives you different ways to explore the region’s history in one place.
Hammarbacken also brings the industrial past to life. The site belongs to the historic Ludvika bruk ironworks, Sweden’s first Crown ironworks, which Gustav Vasa established around 1550 for forging bar iron. Hammarbacken is also home to a four-storey granary built between 1803 and 1805 using slag-brick masonry constructed according to the so-called Geisler method. Hammarbacken can be visited independently; an information board provides details on site. From there, you can enjoy a beautiful view of Lake Väsman and Ludvika herrgård.
Walking, Lakes and Active Days Away
For a walk in the town centre, the High Voltage Valley Walk is available. The route is approximately 5.5 kilometres long. A shorter loop is offered by the trail at Marnästjärn: it is 2.6 kilometres long and leads around the lake in the centre of Ludvika. Colour markings make it easier to find your way. This allows you to choose between two different walks depending on the distance you prefer.
At Skuthamn, you can rent kayaks to explore Lake Väsman. If you prefer to travel on land, you can plan the Ludvikaturen cycling tour. It starts and ends in Ludvika at Väsmanstrand and offers views along Lakes Väsman, Björken and Bysjön. The proximity to the water makes swimming and fishing possible.
Choose the Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans
For a culture-focused stay, the church, Hammarbacken, Ludvika gammelgård and the Dan Andersson Museum can provide the common thread. The museum presents the poet’s life and poetry; the exhibits include, among other things, Dan’s black violin. It also offers the digital Dan Andersson-land and presentations of all recipients of the Dan Andersson Award.
If you are travelling with different interests, you can create a varied stay: historic buildings and museums alongside walking trails, cycling tours and experiences on the lake. When searching for accommodation, consider which of these highlights best suits your preferred daily itinerary, without committing yourself to just one activity.
