Gräv: Nature, cross-country skiing and history
Accommodation in Gräv
Gräv combines a cross-country skiing route through the village with nature and cultural experiences in the surrounding area. Nature reserves, hiking trails and historic sites offer different ways to shape your stay. When looking for holiday accommodation, you can first decide whether winter activities, landscapes or local history will be your main focus.
Nature and landscapes around Gräv
Near Gräv, the Grävsbuan Nature Reserve is located on Grävsbodberget and slopes down to the Grävsbuan summer pasture. Prästbodarna, also called Prästbuan, is both a nature reserve and a summer pasture. Its landscape is a mosaic of bogs and higher-lying coniferous forests with pine and spruce. At Grävsbuan, the sloping terrain shapes the landscape; at Prästbodarna, it is the transition between bog and forest.
Hiking and cross-country skiing
Grävsbuan Nature Reserve can be reached via a hiking trail from Larssveden. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out. In the area around Gräv, the Gyllbergen Wilderness Area has marked summer and winter trails, as well as several huts and wind shelters for outdoor recreation.
Another hiking route runs for about 3 km in the direction of Grävsbodarna; you can take a detour from the route to visit Grävsbodarna. For cross-country skiing, the 10 km Åkerspåret route passes through Gräv as well as Österfors, Tjärna and Kyrkbyn. This offers different activities to focus on: hiking on trails in the surrounding area or cross-country skiing on a route through several villages. Conditions may vary by season; check them before your trip. The route lengths differ considerably: about 3 km for the hiking route and 10 km for Åkerspåret.
Cultural history in the surrounding area
Gagnefs Minnesstuga comprises 22 buildings of different types and uses dating from the 16th to the 19th century, and is located near Gräv. Mörtbodarna is also part of the area's history: the place was first mentioned in writing in 1722. During the land consolidation from 1811 to 1817, Mörtbodarna had ten co-owners, including people from Gräv. Mörtbodarna is considered an area of great cultural-historical and environmental value.
A historic main road ran from south to north through Tjärna and Gräv. Gräv is also home to an execution site where the last execution in Gagnef's history took place. Together with the buildings at Minnesstuga and the history of Mörtbodarna, this provides a cultural focus alongside the nature experiences.
Planning your stay
When looking for holiday accommodation in Gräv, it helps to decide on your preferred focus first: the cross-country skiing route passes through the village, while hiking and cultural history also take you to places in the surrounding area. Consider which of these experiences you want to shape your stay, and plan your trip accordingly.
