Avesta combines impressive industrial heritage with art, nature experiences and a variety of activities. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between historical discoveries, exhibitions, European bison and paths along the Dalälven. A holiday apartment or holiday home in Avesta can be selected to suit the focus you want to give your trip.

Industrial History and Art at Verket

A central point of interest is Verket, housed in Avesta’s old ironworks buildings. The museum and cultural arena combine history, technology, art and culture in an unusually well-preserved industrial landscape. Avesta’s ironworks is considered industrial heritage of national importance and vividly illustrates the town’s industrial character.

Every summer, Verket hosts Avesta Art. The exhibition presents new works each year, complementing the historic setting with a changing artistic focus. General guided tours are available for the art exhibition. If you would like to combine culture and tangible history when planning your trip, you can therefore include Verket as a separate item on your itinerary.

Gamla Byn and Avesta’s Older Sides

Gamla Byn is Avesta’s oldest district. This lively and well-preserved industrial neighbourhood lies on the Dalälven and includes buildings from the 1630s and later. This provides a different way of accessing the town’s history than the ironworks: in Gamla Byn, the focus is not only on industrial development but also on the historic district that grew over time.

Guided tours of Gamla Byn can be booked year-round. This is an interesting option for visitors who want not only to see the historical context for themselves but also to learn about it on a guided tour. Depending on your preferred day of travel, you can combine the district with Verket or Avesta Art’s new annual exhibition to create a cultural focus.

European Bison, Water Landscapes and Paths

Avesta Visentpark is dedicated to the European bison. It is one of Northern Europe’s most important breeding facilities for the conservation of this species. Endangered European bison can be observed in large enclosures. The park also offers a digital tour with QR codes. This complements the cultural attractions with a nature experience focused on a clear theme.

The Dalälven also shapes the experiences around Avesta. Döda Fallen was formed when the river changed its course around 7,000 years ago. The site is located on the Älvpromenaden loop, which is 8.5 km long and runs between Avesta and Krylbo. You can take this specific route length into account when planning your day if you are considering an excursion through the river landscape.

Active Days and Choosing Your Accommodation

For sporting variety, Sportparken i Avesta offers skateboard ramps, a parkour park, a disc golf course, beach volleyball, hockey and an outdoor fitness gym. The facility is intended for everyone and therefore offers several ways to spend an active day. As a landmark, the world’s largest Dala horse welcomes visitors where National Roads 70 and 68 meet in Avesta.

When searching for accommodation, you can first determine your preferred travel rhythm: those interested in culture can focus their plans on Verket, Avesta Art and Gamla Byn, while nature and activity days can centre on Visentpark, Döda Fallen or Sportparken. This keeps your choice of holiday apartment or holiday home oriented towards your actual interests without requiring you to commit to a single type of holiday.
