In eastern Blekinge, Jämjö lies directly beside the Ådalen Nature Reserve. This geologically complex formation is unique in Blekinge and rare in southern Sweden. Hammarbyån, part of Åbyån, winds through fine-grained sediments; for the most part, the watercourse has retained its natural, original form. The landscape and local history thus give your stay two distinct focal points.

Ådalen: trails and landscape

From the centre of Jämjö, you can walk or cycle to the nature reserve. The nearest bus stop to the reserve is Jämjö centrum; from there, it is about 500 metres on foot to the nature reserve. Check the current bus service before travelling. There are several hiking trails and rest areas in Ådalen. The Ådalen Trail is 4.0 kilometres long; a 2-kilometre section runs from Jämjö kyrka to Orionstugan. The two lengths refer to different distances: the entire trail and this section. The trails in Ådalen have not been adapted to be accessible to people with disabilities. At Furudalsvägen, there are illuminated running and ski tracks measuring 870 metres, 1.4 kilometres, 2.4 kilometres, 5.0 kilometres, 8.4 kilometres and 10.2 kilometres. Their availability in winter depends on snow conditions.

Church and transport history

Under Chapter 4 of the Swedish Heritage Conservation Act, Jämjö kyrka is protected as a church heritage site. Its predecessor was a medieval stone church, whose demolition began on 27 April 1824. Stones from the older building were reused in the construction of the present church. On 22 October 1826, Bishop Wilhelm Faxe consecrated the new church; it was named Oscars kyrka after the Crown Prince of the time. Jämjö Skjutsstation also has a long transport history: its origins as a travel hub date back to the 17th century. The Östra Blekinge Hembygdsförening holds photography exhibitions at the station. If you would like to plan a visit to an exhibition, check the dates before travelling.

Library and nearby amenities

Jämjö as a holiday apartment destination

Jämjö is a good choice when selecting a holiday apartment if you would like to combine nature trails with local history: Ådalen lies directly beside the town, while the church and Skjutsstation are historical highlights.
