Karlshamn invites you to discover a blend of urban history, nature and sea. Museums, historic sites, protected landscapes, hiking trails and bathing spots give the town a variety of facets that unfold in distinctive experiences.

Culture and history

Karlshamn Museum is spread across several historic buildings in Karlshamn. It presents exhibitions on the town’s economy, shipping and everyday life, and also has a memorial room for the composer Alice Tegnér, who was born in Karlshamn. The J. N. von Bergen Punsch Factory provides a special historical highlight: it is Sweden’s only punsch museum, where Swedish industrial history can be experienced.

Skottsbergska gården is one of Sweden’s best-preserved merchant’s courtyards from the 18th century. This listed cultural heritage site conveys an impression of Karlshamn’s historic commercial life. The historic Dahla Magazine, dating from 1878, houses the Sjöfartsmuseet Karlshamn maritime museum. There, visitors can see an authentic crew accommodation area from a 19th-century sailing ship.

Konstmuseet Martinssonska Gården is a living museum in an artist’s home on Lotsgatan. Its collection fills eleven rooms, while larger sculptures are displayed in the landscaped courtyard. Carl Gustafs kyrka also preserves notable historic details: the baptismal font was donated in 1717, while the bronze baptismal bowl dates from shortly after 1519. Kreativum is Karlshamn’s science centre and has one of Sweden’s three MegaDome cinemas. Östersjöfestivalen is Karlshamn’s traditional four-day town festival.

Nature and trails

Stärnö-Boön is one of Karlshamn’s important recreational and hiking areas. Trails lead through deciduous and pine forests as well as across rocky terrain with sea views. Stärnö-Boön is protected as a nature reserve; the larger part belongs to the Natura 2000 site.

The Stärnö recreational area has marked trails of various types, including trails with reduced accessibility barriers and routes suitable for pushchairs. Stärnö badplats has a gently sloping sandy beach, bathing jetties and rocky shoreline sections. Strandbad Stärnö also has a barbecue area and toilets. In the vicinity of Karlshamn, Laxaleden is an approximately 30-kilometre-long cultural and historical hiking trail centred on the Mörrumsån.

The sea and historic connections

Karlshamn Kallbadhus is located in Väggaparken between the town centre and Vägga Fiskehamn. It offers separate areas for women and men with a sauna and sea bathing, as well as a shared lounge. Vägga Havsbad is a bathing spot close to town with a sandy beach and green spaces.

Construction of the Kastellet fortification began in 1675. Kastellet remained in use until 1865; archipelago boats from Karlshamn call at the site. The Utvandrarmonumentet depicts Karl Oskar and Kristina from Vilhelm Moberg’s novel „The Emigrants“ and commemorates the fact that Karlshamn was once a port of emigration.

In addition, the local pages lead to Asarum, Mörrum, Svängsta, Åryd, Karlshamn and Svarvaremåla.
