Holiday Apartment in Santiago De La Ribera: Coast, Nature and Culture

Santiago De La Ribera combines a distinctive coastal landscape with nature observation, architectural history and vibrant festival traditions. The character of the town is particularly evident in its two-kilometre promenade, the bathing platforms extending over the sea and the historic traces that reflect the town’s development, from its origins to Spanish aviation.

Nature

At Playa de La Hita, the wetland environment provides opportunities for birdwatching. The area is designated as a ZEPA and features native flora and fauna.

Coast

The Paseo Marítimo de Santiago de la Ribera is two kilometres long and intended largely for pedestrians. Centuries-old palm trees line the promenade and give it a distinctive appearance. Another prominent feature on the waterfront is the Club Náutico. It serves as a landmark along the promenade; its side elevations are reminiscent of the shape of a sailing boat.

Along the shoreline of Santiago de la Ribera, bathing platforms extend over the surface of the sea and shape the course of the beach. Together, the promenade, palm trees, Club Náutico and platforms create a coastal setting with clearly recognisable architectural and maritime features.

Culture

The restored funerary sculpture of the founders, María Teresa Sandoval and José María Barnuevo, can be seen on the façade of the church of Santiago de la Ribera. The sculpture was originally created for the Pantheon chapel, from which today’s church later emerged. Another testament to the town’s history is the Noria Finca Torre Mínguez. It dates from the late 19th or early 20th century and drew water on the estate from which Santiago de la Ribera emerged. In restored form, the noria demonstrates how water was drawn from a well with the help of an animal. It has been designed for educational purposes and fitted with monumental lighting.

Aviation history also has a visible presence in Santiago de la Ribera. The M.A.T. Museo Aeronáutico Tiflológico is an open-air museum that is open to the public and adapted for visitors with visual or hearing impairments. Information about the models on display is conveyed through tactile perception and QR codes. The municipality’s first airfield dates back to 1920. At that time, the Spanish Navy intended to establish its first naval air base in Santiago de la Ribera as the main centre of Spanish naval aviation.

The Iglesia Castrense Nuestra Señora de Loreto is part of the area’s military and religious history. It was built in the 1970s as a military church for the staff of the Academia General del Aire (AGA) and their families. The Virgen de Loreto is the patron saint of the Spanish Air Force and of aviation.

Local festival traditions also come to the fore throughout the year. On 25 July, celebrations take place in Santiago de la Ribera; the programme usually includes sporting events, musical performances, fireworks, a procession and a summer carnival. The first parades and events of the Santiago de la Ribera carnival took place in 1988. In addition, Santiago de la Ribera hosts a maritime procession and popular local festivals.
