Nature

The Río Chícamo is classified as a Site of Community Importance, or SCI for short. At the same time, it is one of the 135 river nature reserves designated in Spain. Within the Region of Murcia, it is the only river nature reserve. These three characteristics describe the importance of the river from different perspectives: they identify its European protection category, its classification within Spain's designated sites and its special status in the Region of Murcia.

The area includes a permanently flowing section of river with connected rambla systems and wetlands. Macisvenda is one of the access points to this area. To visit the source of the Río Chícamo, the route follows the A-9 country road. Along the way, you pass El Partidor, El Tollé and La Umbría. After the junction for Macisvenda, continue towards El Cantón as far as the hamlet of Chícamo; from there, a dirt track leads to the source.

Culture

The Iglesia San Juan Bautista in Macisvenda forms part of the area's local history. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1996, it became independent from the parish of Barinas. Thus, the same church is associated both with its time of construction and with a later change in its parish affiliation.

Macisvenda is also home to a monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, built in 1995. A viewpoint was established on the hill where this monument stands. From there, visitors can view the landscape around the village. The monument and its associated viewpoint therefore combine a visible landmark with a view of Macisvenda itself.

Festivals and traditions

Macisvenda's local festivals are held under the patronage of San Juan Bautista. The patron saint's festival is celebrated on 29 August. In June, a small pilgrimage takes place, traditionally organised by the village's hunters. During this pilgrimage, San Juan Bautista is carried to a spring of underground waters.

In Macisvenda, ecclesiastical history, local feast days and a special procession thus exist side by side. The Iglesia San Juan Bautista, the monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the June pilgrimage each refer to specific places, dates or proceedings.
