In Torres del Río, the cultural context begins with the Iglesia del Santo Sepulcro: built in the 12th century, it has an octagonal floor plan and served as a funerary chapel and beacon for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago.

Culture

Its construction combines a central polygonal floor plan with an octagonal elevation. The latter is divided into three levels by continuous cornices and crowned by a smaller octagonal structure. The architectural forms imitate the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Inside, there is an interwoven ribbed vault reminiscent of Hispano-Muslim art.

A second cultural focal point is the parish church of San Andrés. It is a work of Gothic-Renaissance architecture by Juanes de Larrañaga, dating from around 1599 to 1629. Its main altarpiece was created by Pedro Jiménez Castrejana between 1637 and 1651. The altarpiece retains its original polychromy, created by Andrés de Gauna.

Camino de Santiago and Landscape

A stage of the French Way from Los Arcos to Logroño leads to Torres del Río after crossing the Linares River over a bridge, passing the Iglesia del Santo Sepulcro on the ascent. The route to Torres del Río passes through vineyards, olive groves and almond groves before reaching the Cornava river plain.

The Camino de Santiago climbs from the church to the upper part of Torres del Río and continues to the Ermita de la Virgen del Poyo. This gives you different focal points to consider when planning: sacred architecture, the route of the trail and changing landscapes. The information can be considered separately, depending on which aspect of your trip is most important to you.

Townscape

The town centre of Torres del Río has an irregular layout due to its location on the slopes of a hill. It features steep, narrow streets lined with Baroque mansions and decorative coats of arms. The townscape thus combines the topographical form of the centre with historic buildings and visible details on the houses.

Geographical Location

From Pamplona to Torres del Río, the route follows the A-12 motorway towards Logroño and then the NA-1110 road. For travel planning, both the route from the direction of Pamplona and the connection with the course of the French Way are therefore available as separate points of reference.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Torres del Río, take your time to compare travel dates, room category and cancellation policies side by side; these three details are among the central fields for a factual evaluation of offers when planning your trip for the desired date.
