Discover Orkoien: History, Culture and Leisure

Orkoien combines traces of history with dedicated facilities for culture, sports and swimming. The first documented historical reference dates back to the early 13th century and concerns a donation by Señora de Orcoyen to Leyre Monastery. After the Battle of Vitoria, the Duke of Wellington used what is now Casa del Cura in Orkoien as his headquarters while directing the military operations to capture Pamplona.

History

In the Middle Ages, Orkoien was a royal fief. For the year 1280, an annual grain levy of 23.5 cahíces of wheat, 20 cahíces of barley and 30 cahíces of oats is recorded. Charles III granted Orkoien half of the first-fruit levies so that the Church of San Miguel and the Basilica of San Esteban could be maintained. Orkoien also has a slender 18th-century portico with arcades and Doric columns.

Culture

The cultural centre in Orkoien has an event space with 260 seats, space for a library and a children's area. There are also three multipurpose rooms for meetings, workshops, courses or rehearsals.
