Townscape and culture

The old town of Aoiz/Agoitz comprises Gothic and modern civil architecture. It includes houses made of ashlar with pointed or round-arched portals, wooden eaves and coats of arms. In the town centre is Parque de Navarra, a recreational area overlooking the Irati River next to the Romanesque Auzola or Bidelepu Bridge. The medieval four-arched Bidelepu Bridge crosses the Irati River.

History

Casa Palacio de Argamasilla was built at the end of the 15th century in the Renaissance style and is considered one of the finest examples of Navarrese civil architecture. Iglesia de San Miguel was built from the 15th century onwards over an earlier Romanesque church and retains its robust tower structure. Fuente Grande or Fuente de las Eras dates from 1801 and features a neoclassical design with the coat of arms of Aoiz.

The small, recently restored Ermita de San Román is located 3 km from Aoiz on the local Camino de Guenduláin path. The peace treaty between the Agramonteses and Beaumonteses was signed there in 1479, an event associated with the creation of Aoiz's coat of arms.

The permanent exhibition “Historias de Aoiz” in the cultural centre uses a detailed model to show what Aoiz looked like in 1929. The permanent exhibition “El Irati, S.A.” in Aoiz is a permanent cultural and historical visitor attraction as well as a historical and cultural point of reference for the town.

The electric El-Irati railway between Pamplona/Iruña and Sangüesa/Zangoza transported company products and also served public passenger transport.

Paths and landscape

The route to Ermita de San Lorenzo offers views of the Aoiz area, the Sierra de Zariquieta and the Itoiz Reservoir. The Sierra de Artxuba/Zarikieta route is 18 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 482 metres. An easy variant of the Rala Trail leads to the Quejigo de Rala, a Portuguese oak (Quercus faginea) designated as Natural Monument MN-6. A local hiking trail leads to the Induriaga necropolis and offers a panoramic view of the Itoiz Reservoir.

The Ermita de San Román–Río Irati hiking route in Aoiz is 6.6 kilometres long, has a low level of difficulty and follows a linear course. It passes through a pine forest to the Nevera de Aoiz; in this ice house, winter snow was compacted into ice to preserve food. From the viewpoint on the Irati River, the former sawmill of Ekai can be seen, a group of industrial buildings from the early 20th century.

Routes

The Camino Natural del Irati is a 56.6-kilometre route that runs from Sangüesa/Zangoza via Liédena, Lumbier, Urraúl Bajo, Lónguida, Aoiz/Agoitz, Urroz-Villa and Lizoain-Arriasgoiti to Valle de Egüés/Eguesibar.

The “Camino Natural del Irati” project aims to restore the former railway line of the El-Irati railway as a cycle path; the second section runs through Lónguida, Aoiz and Urraúl Bajo.
