Horcajuelo de la Sierra – Museums, Views and Trails

Horcajuelo de la Sierra has preserved its traditional architectural character and lies within the Sierra del Rincón Biosphere Reserve. In the architectural inventory of the Community of Madrid, the town centre was classified as a town centre of rural interest. This provides a clear basis for planning around the townscape, culture and landscape.

Culture and History

The Ethnological Museum is housed in a traditional building renovated in 1997, with slate masonry, small windows and roofs made of curved Arabic tiles. It conveys the traditional way of life in agriculture and livestock farming through work tools and equipment used for measuring grain and producing flour and bread. The visit includes a free guided tour of the forge.

The Church of San Nicolás de Bari dates back in origin to the 15th century and replaced an older structure. Its Gothic chapel has a visible stone rib vault. The church preserves a medieval baptismal font and a Baroque altarpiece in the presbytery.

The Vargas Museum displays works of painting, photography and sculpture. It also permanently houses a valuable art collection belonging to a painter who was closely associated with Horcajuelo de la Sierra.

Landscape

The landscape around Horcajuelo de la Sierra includes pine and oak forests, extensive scrubland, meadows and former terraced fields. Alto de Campadales offers wide views over the landscape of Horcajuelo de la Sierra and its surroundings. The Mirador del Alto de Campadales provides an excellent westward view of the Lozoya Valley and Peñalara.

Trails

The Senda del Molino del Tío Cecilio y Vuelta por la Dehesilla passes an alder avenue or stand interspersed with oaks, wild roses and poplars. The trail also leads visitors to the Molino de Horcajuelo, where they can see water wheels belonging to a mechanism used to operate two pairs of granite millstones.

The Camino de los Terreros y la Calleja de los Llanos runs through meadows and grazing areas enclosed by stone walls, with typical oak and ash vegetation. The Camino de la Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores initially leads into the centre of Horcajuelo de la Sierra towards the church. The different trail settings each offer distinct highlights among forest, grazing areas, the town centre and historical traces. For planning a day, the themes described can be clearly distinguished: the museums and church represent independent cultural attractions, while Alto de Campadales and the viewpoint focus on the landscape, the Lozoya Valley and Peñalara. Along the trails, the surroundings alternate between alder stands, meadows enclosed by stone walls and the town centre with its church. Culture, views and trail routes therefore emerge as separate focal points.
