San Martín de Castañeda on Lake Sanabria
The Monasterio de Santa María, also referred to as the Monasterio de San Martín de Castañeda, is designated as a historic-artistic monument. When planning your visit, you can distinguish between architecture, landscape, nature-park topics and seasonal traditions, and give these themes different weight according to your own personal interests.
Culture
The Monasterio de Santa María is the only fully preserved Cistercian church in the province of Zamora. The preserved Romanesque church of the Monasterio de Santa María has a Latin-cross floor plan with three naves, a cubic transept and three stepped semicircular apses. The Iglesia de San Martín in San Martín de Castañeda houses a Romanesque sculpture of the Virgin and Child from the first third of the 13th century. The traditional architecture of San Martín de Castañeda includes houses with external staircases leading to the first floor, as well as communal ovens in which local women still bake bread today.
You can consider the sacred architecture, the individual work of art and the village building styles separately, and arrange the different cultural elements alongside one another for your own planning.
Landscape
San Martín de Castañeda is situated on the northern shore of Lake Sanabria. Route Z3, the “Senda del Lago y los Monjes”, passes through San Martín de Castañeda and offers views of Lake Sanabria. Moncalvo, a peak, and Trevinca, a mountain, are located in the vicinity of San Martín de Castañeda. In the wider regional surroundings of San Martín de Castañeda are Pena Trevinca, a mountain, and Alto de Peña Negra, a peak. Santo Amaro, a ruin, is also located in the wider regional surroundings of San Martín de Castañeda.
The route, lakeshore and named elevations offer different focal points for planning your own day. You can consider the spatial relationships separately and arrange the landscape themes according to your preferred focus.
Nature Park
The Casa del Parque San Martín de Castañeda is located in the Monasterio de Santa María and serves as the interpretation centre for the Lago de Sanabria nature park. It offers an interpretation area covering rocks and their formation, landforms and glaciers.
For your preparation, you can place natural-history topics and cultural references to the local area alongside one another as different approaches. This leaves the choice of personal priorities open between landscape, architectural history and the presentation of natural-history connections.
Traditions
The Visparra on 5 January is performed by the young men of the village; the central figure is the Talanqueira, a large cow figure. During the Visparra on 5 January, the Talanqueira and other figures go from house to house in the village and ask for the Aguinaldo.
