Hiking and connections

Casafranca is incorporated into the GR-181, a signposted hiking trail that includes the municipality of Casafranca and runs through the Sierra de Béjar-Francia Biosphere Reserve. The trail is officially certified by the Spanish Mountaineering and Hiking Federation. As a circular route, it is 95 km long and divided into eight stages. It connects various localities and their hamlets via public paths and livestock tracks.

Between Casafranca and Navarredonda de Salvatierra, the GR-181 is connected to the Vía de la Plata. From Casafranca, two forest tracks lead to the Las Zorreras quarry; they are approximately 2.2 km and 2.6 km long, respectively. Landscape and geology

The Las Zorreras geological site lies near Casafranca on Cerro de Monreal. The quarry is closed and has been restored; it has been prepared for visits.

An approximately 5 km-long, easy circular route in Casafranca leads to the summit of Pico Monreal. From there, the landscape of Campo Charro can be observed. Pico Monreal itself is a 1,084 m-high inselberg in the foothills of the Sierra de Tonda.

The routes differ not only in length but also in form: the GR-181 is a circular route divided into stages, the routes to Las Zorreras are forest tracks, and the route to Pico Monreal is a circular route. You can compare these details separately for your own planning.

Traditional architecture

Casafranca's traditional architecture includes small extensions projecting from the stone façade, known as “portalitos”. They protect the main entrance from rain and wind. Some have stone benches attached to the side walls.

Casafranca's traditional houses are low and have very thick walls. They have few exterior openings, which consist mainly of small windows. Casafranca's slate houses form an attractive traditional architectural ensemble.

Culture and history

The chancel of the church in Casafranca preserves a Mudejar wooden coffered ceiling. In the area of Casafranca, specifically in Aldeanueva de Campomojado, a Roman tombstone was found outside an archaeological context.
