Culture and History

The Cistercian monastery of Santa María de Sandoval was built on land that Alfonso VII donated in 1142 to Count Pedro Ponce de Minerva and his wife Estefanía Ramírez. In 1167, the count transferred this land to the monks of La Espina Monastery for the construction of another monastery.

The monastery is an example of Late Romanesque architecture in transition to the Gothic style and dates from the 12th to the 13th century. Santa María de Sandoval houses the founders’ sarcophagi as well as various carvings from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Art and Local Tradition

La Panera is an 18th-century building constructed in 1789 and belonged to the ancillary complex of the Cistercian monastery. At Santa María de Sandoval Monastery, La Panera is used as a rural exhibition space for contemporary art. This includes works from the collection of the Instituto Leonés de Cultura, as well as works by local, national and international artists.

A visitor reception centre has been established in La Panera de Sandoval, where visitors can learn about the history of Sandoval Monastery and the distinctive features of its surroundings. The building is also intended for exhibitions, presentations and conferences.

The Belén Concejil de Villaverde de Sandoval is set up inside the church of the former monastery. Its expanded display includes more than 100 handmade figures representing real people from the village and wearing their own clothing.

The Belén Concejil was open free of charge from Wednesdays to Sundays, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., until February.
