Oseja de Sajambre – Trails, Peaks and Village History

Alongside Posada de Valdeón, Oseja de Sajambre is one of the two municipalities in Castile and León that belong to Picos de Europa National Park.

Trails and History

The Senda del Arcediano crosses the entire Sajambre Valley; its section between Oseja and Soto de Sajambre is 4,895 metres long. It was already documented in 973 as the “vía de Sajambre”. Shortly after leaving Oseja, the Senda del Arcediano towards Pontón passes a recreational area with tables and children’s play equipment. Shorter circular walks and longer connections can be considered separately when planning the day.

Mountains and Views

From Pico Jairo, the panoramic view extends across the entire Sajambre Valley to Cordal del Colláu Zorru, Peña Beza and Canto Cabronero, as well as to the southern slopes of the western and central Picos de Europa massifs. Pico Pozúa, also known as Jian, is a 1,923-metre-high peak of the Cantabrian Mountains; the ascent from the La Petanera bend involves approximately 700 metres of elevation gain. On the ascent to Pico Pozúa, you reach a meadow with a wide view northwards over Los Beyos and eastwards towards the western and central Picos de Europa massifs. Peña Beza lies north of Soto de Sajambre, rises above the Sajambre Valley and offers a good view of the Picos de Europa.

Culture

The Ermita de San Roque was built around the beginning of the 16th century and rebuilt in 1703 at the expense of the inhabitants of Oseja. Santa María de Oseja was originally established as a privately endowed church owned by the Counts of Flainez. Casa del Conde is a manor house in the Las Cortes district of Oseja de Sajambre that is now in ruins.

The “Sajambre tradicional” route passes through Oseja de Sajambre and its surroundings, illustrates the traditional architecture and way of life of the local population, and includes a visit to the ethnographic collection “La Memoria de Sajambre” in a traditional house. Guided tours with interpretation through Oseja de Sajambre include 2-kilometre walks with stops at hórreos, washhouses and traditional houses.

Circular Routes

PR-PNPE 10 begins above Oseja at the Ermita de San Roque, follows the Senda del Arcediano towards Soto and then continues to Ribota de Arriba and Ribota de Abajo; from there, a path runs along the Sella River before the route returns to Oseja. The PR-PNPE 10 circular route, “Ruta pueblos de Sajambre”, showcases the traditional stone and timber architecture of Sajambre and identifies churches and washhouses in Oseja and Ribota, the schools of Soto de Sajambre and the Sella River as places of interest. It is 10.2 kilometres long.

Activities and Dates

Throughout the summer, the La Fonseya Visitor Centre hosts various activities for local residents and visitors to Picos de Europa National Park, including guided routes, talks, workshops and themed days for different age groups. The Feria Ganadera de Oseja de Sajambre takes place on 24 October or the following Saturday; it includes exhibitions, crafts, gastronomy and a display of Queso de Beyos.
