Molinaseca between the Way of St. James and Cultural Heritage

Molinaseca is designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of Historic Site. The characteristic linear urban structure is closely connected with the Way of St. James. Thus, historic architecture, pilgrim tradition and landscape come together in clearly recognisable features in one place.

When planning a holiday apartment in Molinaseca, you can compare travel dates, room categories and cancellation policies on the accommodation pages. The characteristics of the town provide an objective guide encompassing cultural history, the pilgrimage route, landscape and summer tradition.

Culture

One of the prominent structures is the Puente de los Peregrinos, a stone-block bridge with seven arches. Some authors attribute the three oldest arches to Roman times. The Las Puentes de Malpaso, bridges on the route between Molinaseca and Riego de Ambrós, also date from Roman times.

Calle Real is a picturesque street extending from the bridge to the Santo Cristo wayside cross and lined with stone houses and palaces. The Iglesia de San Nicolás de Bari dates from the 17th century; its furnishings include a Baroque altarpiece with Solomonic columns and a Gothic crucifix. The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias dates in its present extent from 1705. The Casa-palacio de Cangas y Pambley is also designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest.

Several designated institutions and sites are located in the surroundings of Molinaseca: the Museo del Bierzo, the Museo de la Radio and the Museo del Ferrocarril are museums. They are joined by the Castillo De Los Templarios as a castle, as well as the Parque de Gil y Carrasco "El Plantío", the Parque de la Concordia and the Parque del Temple as designated parks.

Landscape

The Valle del Meruelo forms the natural gateway of the Way of St. James to El Bierzo. The Río Meruelo flows through Molinaseca; it supports riparian forests of alders and ash trees, with its riverbank vegetation being particularly pronounced outside Molinaseca. Below the Puente de los Peregrinos, a bathing area begins at the river that can be used in summer.

In the wider regional surroundings of Molinaseca, Cruz Mayor is a designated summit. The different landscape contexts therefore range from the river valley at the town to a summit in the wider regional surroundings and can be considered separately when planning your personal trip.

Pilgrimage Route and Traditions

The Fiesta del Agua in Molinaseca is a tradition held in August. During this fiesta, the course of the river is diverted so that the water flows along the main street to Plaza del Rollo. Another symbol of the pilgrim tradition is the Monumento al peregrino, a sculpture depicting Santiago as a pilgrim, which was erected in 1995.

The Monolito de hermanamiento con Shikokuy commemorates the partnership between the Way of St. James and the Japanese route Shikoku Henro. El Buda de Molinaseca, also called Talla de Kannon en árbol vivo, represents a special connection between art, nature and spirituality: the depiction is carved into a living walnut tree. It represents a female Buddha figure whose symbolic meaning is associated with compassion.
