Caldas de Luna: Thermal Baths, Brañas Culture and Nature

Caldas de Luna is home to the Balneario Caldas de Luna, offering a thermal bath experience focused on well-being and health. The area surrounding the Balneario has been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Caldas de Luna brings together different geographical levels: landscapes in the surrounding area alongside destinations in the wider regional area. This spatial range extends from the Hoz del Pincuejo gorge and several peaks to a natural park and various museums.

A spring with an outlet temperature of 28 degrees emerges in Caldas de Luna. The restaurant at the Balneario Caldas de Luna serves traditional Leonese cuisine.

Nature

The Hoz del Pincuejo is one of the narrowest gorges in the province of León. It is a narrow gorge formed by the erosion of the river and other factors. It has extreme conditions in which only a few specialised plant and animal species can survive.

The Cueto Negro peak, the Peña Ubiña peak and the Picos del Fontán mountain are located in the area surrounding Caldas de Luna. The Alto de la Cañada mountain lies in the wider regional area around Caldas de Luna. The Parque Natural de Las Ubiñas - La Mesa is located in the wider regional area around Caldas de Luna.

Routes

The Anillo de Luna route can be started anywhere in the Caldas valley and completed in either direction. The recommended route ascends via Robledo and descends through the Cacabillos valley to Caldas de Luna. For this route, both an open starting point and a named course via Robledo and the Cacabillos valley are therefore specified.

The Ruta de las Brañas de Caldas allows visitors to see some of the few surviving examples of Brañas culture in the central Leonese Mountains. While the Anillo de Luna focuses on the starting point and direction of travel, the Ruta de las Brañas de Caldas links its route with the surviving examples of this culture.

Culture

Caldas de Luna is home to the Casona del Conde de Nava, decorated with coats of arms. The manor house, with two coats of arms, consists of a main building and an extension dating from the 17th century. Both parts were built using ashlar stone and masonry.

The Museum Nido del Urogallo, the Parque de la Prehistoria de Teverga museum and the Poblado Minero de Bustiello museum are located in the wider regional area around Caldas de Luna. Thus, the manor house in Caldas de Luna, the Brañas culture and the three museums represent different cultural points of reference, each with its own spatial classification around the town.
