Discover Montañana: Ebro, hiking trails and Romanesque traces

The GR 291 “Agua y Roca” route passes through Montañana. It connects the Montes Obarenes with the Ebro between Pancorbo and Miranda de Ebro and runs along forest roads, tracks and paths. The route is divided into three stages: Pancorbo–Santa Gadea del Cid, covering 18.60 kilometres; Santa Gadea del Cid–Suzana, covering 17.10 kilometres; and Suzana–Pancorbo, covering 23.40 kilometres. The different lengths provide a clear basis for comparison when incorporating the route sections into your daily planning.

Nature

At the edge of Montañana, the Ebro forms the boundary with the neighbouring region of Álava. The artificial Yelsos lagoons were created through gravel extraction in a meander of the river. The Sendero Campos de Montañana also leads through the landscape: it runs through cultivated fields and offers views of the Montes Obarenes on the horizon. This trail also includes a small group of Pyrenean oaks, known as roble melojo. They are considered a remnant of the natural vegetation of the plains around Montañana. Water, open agricultural spaces and views of the mountains create different landscape accents.

Culture

Montañana is home to the Romanesque church of San Andrés, dating from the 12th century, more precisely from its final third. Its Romanesque portal has three archivolts and four columns with capitals. The capitals are decorated with natural motifs, flowers and fleshy leaves. Inside, there is a Romanesque limestone baptismal font. The church thus brings together several clearly recognisable architectural and artisan details in one place.

Geographical setting

The road from Miranda de Ebro via La Nave and Suzana divides Montañana into two parts; the parish church of San Andrés lies on its right-hand side. This road layout is as much part of the village’s appearance as its location on the Ebro and the connections to the surrounding paths.

Trails

Stage 11 of the Camino Natural del Ebro leaves Montañana beside the church of San Andrés. It follows the path from Carrasuzana towards the southeast and joins the road to Miranda. Along its route between Sobrón and Miranda de Ebro, the stage passes through the riverside places of Guinicio, Montañana, Suzana and La Nave. The route also passes in front of the Montañana cemetery; the cemetery can be reached via a paved track.

The Sendero Campos de Montañana begins beside the church of San Andrés, where the trail’s information board is also located. Several trails consequently have different focuses: the GR 291 stages provide specific route lengths, the Camino Natural del Ebro follows a river connection, and the Sendero Campos de Montañana leads through fields to the Pyrenean oaks and the views of the Montes Obarenes.
