Sas Do Monte: Hiking and Granite Spring

The PR-G 266 Ruta das Aldeas de Montederramo passes through the village of Sas do Monte. Within the municipality of Montederramo, its described route connects different types of paths: it starts on fishermen’s paths along the Río Mao and continues to the mill at Ponte Mazaira. The path climbs towards the Serra do Burgo; from there, it descends steeply to the valley floor. The Pozo da Mioteira is also located in the parish of Sas do Monte, at the place called A Mioteira–O Pozo. This granite spring has a livestock watering trough and a nearby washhouse. Hiking and water culture offer two distinct focal points for a stay.

Hiking the PR-G 266

At the recreation area on the Río Mao, the paths give way to meadows and old routes lined with stone walls. The route thus shifts from fishermen’s paths by the river to paths shaped by the walls along them. It then climbs towards the Serra do Burgo, from where a steep descent leads to the valley floor. Along the way, you encounter different types of terrain: riverside paths, meadows, old stone walls and a ridge followed by a descent. This sequence makes the hike appealing if you would like to experience a variety of landscapes on one outing.

As a shorter option, the PR-G 266 includes a 9 km loop marked at the level of the village of As Lamelas. Its length gives you a concrete figure to help plan your trip, in addition to the sections described mainly by their route. The place references differ: the route passes through Sas do Monte, while the shorter loop is marked at the level of As Lamelas. Check the current route and signage before setting out.

The Pozo da Mioteira and its granite architecture

The Pozo da Mioteira is notable for its chapel-like shape. The spring is almost entirely built into a wall and covered by a single-piece granite roof with a slope on one side. Beside it are a livestock watering trough and a washhouse. Together, the spring, trough and washhouse form a small ensemble; the well is therefore not described as a standalone structure. The neighbouring features also make the site interesting for travellers who pay attention to architectural forms and details, not just the course of a path.
