Rock Art and Way of St. James
Pedra da Legua is located near the centre of Roxos. The stone is also situated close to the current route of the Way of St. James to Fisterra. More than twenty rocks with prehistoric engravings are located in the Val de Roxos. The Val de Roxos also contains the largest concentration of rock engravings in Compostela. The Pedra da Legua stone bears inscriptions from different periods. These include the year 1760.
The Petroglyph do Rexío is located directly on the Way of St. James. This section forms part of the extension of the Way of St. James to Fisterra and Muxía. The Petroglyph do Rexío is considered one of the most prominent rock art sites in the Parque Compostela Rupestre.
The rock art in Roxos therefore includes both individually named stones and a larger site with more than twenty engraved rocks. The inscriptions on Pedra da Legua preserve different chronological references, while the Petroglyph do Rexío is connected with the section of the route to Fisterra and Muxía.
Bridges and Sacred Art
The Ponte de Brea crosses the Roxos River as a stone bridge with three arches. In the region, it is referred to as a "Roman bridge". The granite Crucero de Roxos belongs to the complex of the San Miguel Chapel. It consists of an octagonal cross and Florentine-style finials. The Crucero de Roxos depicts the crucified Christ, Santiago Matamoros and Santa Teresa.
The Ponte de Brea and the Crucero de Roxos represent two different forms of built heritage: in one case, the three-arched stone bridge over the river; in the other, the granite cross in the complex of the San Miguel Chapel. Both structures have their own names and clearly described design features.
