Morpeguite: Chapels, Cultural Heritage and the Caldeiras do Castro

Morpeguite combines a small historic chapel with rural architecture, cultural heritage and paths into the surrounding area. The Capela de Morpeguite stands in Morpeguite and is also known as the Capela da Casa da Rosenda. It is a small rectangular chapel with a floor area of 4.5 × 5.5 metres. It was built from rubble masonry; dressed stone was used around the doorway and at the corners of the building. The Capela has a three-sided roof with traditional regional curved roof tiles.

Architecture

The chapel belongs to the Casa da Rosenda estate and, together with the granary, the main residence and other outbuildings, forms an architectural ensemble. It is accessed through a small covered forecourt or a covered solaina. The Cabazo en Morpeguite is a Costa da Morte-type granary standing on a stone base. Its chamber is supported by six pairs of truncated conical feet.

The different structural elements are connected to the respective functions of the buildings: the chapel features several clearly defined construction details, including the doorway, building corners and roof, while the granary has a base and feet. The ensemble therefore brings together sacred, residential and agricultural forms of architecture. The names Capela de Morpeguite and Capela da Casa da Rosenda refer to the same building.

Casa con patín en Morpeguite is registered as an architectural heritage property. The Hórreo da Casa de Morpeguite is an ethnographic heritage property in Morpeguite. Together with the chapel and the Casa da Rosenda ensemble, this reflects a connection between religious buildings, residences and agriculturally influenced forms of architecture that is documented in detail for the locality.

Pilgrimage Routes

Casa de Lema is a farmhouse dating from 1920 and is located in Morpeguite, a district of Muxía. Casa de Lema is 2 kilometres from the Camino de Santiago route to Muxía. Casa de Lema offers pilgrims a luggage transport service. Eco Casa de Lema II is connected to the Camino de Fisterra-Muxía.

Routes and Nature

The Costa da Morte road route to the Caldeiras do Castro passes through Morpeguite. In the immediate vicinity of Morpeguite, the road passes through Coucieiro and Trasufre on its way to the Caldeiras do Castro. The Caldeiras do Castro are a natural and geological area on the Castro River, with rapids, waterfalls and large rock pools.

Recreation Area

In the immediate vicinity of Morpeguite, the Santo Outelo Chapel, dating from the 17th century, is located in the recreation area on the side facing the river. The same recreation area also contains a cross monument dating from the same period as the Santo Outelo Chapel, namely the 17th century.

In August 2024, vegetation was reportedly overgrowing the fountain in Morpeguite’s recreation area. In the same month, the sports field in Morpeguite’s recreation area was reportedly unusable.
