Aranga’s network of hiking trails comprises three prepared and signposted routes, with several information facilities on the municipality’s natural and cultural heritage. Before setting out on hikes along signposted routes, it is advisable to check trail conditions and information about the route. For hikes, current route information provides a practical basis for preparation. Before visiting a waterfall, travellers can also check trail conditions, as the terrain and streams may look different after changes in the weather. This applies particularly when a route continues along a stream beyond the signposted course.

Hiking and landscape

Along the Val de Cambás route, the Fraga das Barbudas is one of the scenic and natural attractions. At the Pozo de Castro Rodicio, hikers can view a waterfall if they continue following the stream beyond the route. The Ponte de Aranga is easily accessible; there is a car park and a recreational area nearby. At the same time, it is a bridge originally built in the 17th century in the Baroque style.

At the Fervenzas de Fervencedo, the deeply cut Fervenzas or Bexo River forms several waterfalls with a drop of more than five metres. The Fervenza do Arroio da Palanca plunges approximately 20 metres. Access to the Fervenzas de Fervencedo waterfalls via the main path is considered not particularly difficult. At approximately 20 metres, the Fervenza do Arroio da Palanca is significantly higher than the waterfalls at Fervenzas de Fervencedo, which are more than five metres high. For waterfalls and streams, current weather and trail conditions are among the usual points that can be taken into account before a hike.

Culture and history

Fonte da Santa Cruz is a granite spring with a raised cross and an essential part of Aranga’s local cultural heritage. The Igrexa de San Cristovo de Muniferral was built in the 13th century, while the Igrexa de San Paio de Aranga was built at the beginning of the 18th century in a predominantly rural Baroque style. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross with three naves and a rectangular apse.

The Igrexa de San Cristovo de Muniferral preserves original zoomorphic and anthropomorphic corbels on the south wall of the main nave. The Mámoas de San Vitorio are located a few metres from the simple Baroque chapel of San Vitorio, dating from the 18th century. Thus, different forms and periods stand side by side at the named cultural sites, from the medieval church to the Baroque religious building and the nearby Mámoas.

Local tradition

The Festa do Carneiro ao espeto takes place every year in Feás (Aranga). The festival invites visitors to taste “carneiro ao espeto”. At festivals, the date and start time can be checked before travelling.

Natural environment
