Discover Tapis: Trails, Springs and Festivals

The Camí vell de Maçanet a Tapis preserves an old section of trail that runs through cork oak forests. The 5-kilometre hiking trail covers an elevation gain of 300 metres; the approximate walking time is 1 hour and 20 minutes, and the difficulty level is moderate to low. The trail leads to Tapis, where the Ermita de Sant Briç can be visited. Current trail conditions should be checked before setting out. Hiking

Another route begins directly in Tapis: The Tapis–Sant Pere Vilars–El Fau route reaches the Sant Pere Vilars chapel after 4.5 kilometres. While the Camí vell de Maçanet a Tapis leads to Tapis, this route starts in the village and includes Sant Pere Vilars as its named destination.

Nature and Views

At Font Fresca, fresh water gushes out in large quantities all year round. Next to the spring are a picnic table, a linden tree and a large chestnut tree.

The Vuelta a Tapis reaches a ridge with views of the Massís de Les Salines; on clear days, the sea can be seen from there. Along the same route, the trail leads to La Gorga del Sabarrès, where you can take a refreshing swim. Tapis is also a viewpoint overlooking the Fraussa Massif, Mount Fau and the Bay of Roses. For routes with views and a bathing spot, the weather conditions and current trail conditions should be checked before setting out.

History

The inhabited centre of Tapis consists of houses grouped around the Sant Briç church. The Sant Briç de Tapis church is first mentioned in a document from 954; in it, Wifredo de Besalú transferred the church to the Sant Pere de Camprodon monastery. Also in 954, Guifré II de Besalú transferred an allod of Tapis to the Sant Pere de Camprodon monastery in order to establish the Les Salines sanctuary there.

At the historic Sant Briç de Tapis chapel, the Ajuntament de Maçanet de Cabrenys had a new beam installed while preserving the original spirit and aesthetics of the historic chapel.

Festivals

The Festa major in the Tapis district takes place on the feast day of its patron saint, Sant Briç, on 13 November. Since 2002, a spring celebration with music by an ensemble and cobla has once again been held in Tapis; it was moved to the last Saturday and Sunday in May.
