Montfullà: Roman Villa, Basilica and Sèquia Monar

Culture and History

The Montfullà Route includes a Roman villa dating from the period between the 1st century BC and the 3rd century AD. Among other features, the Roman villa of Montfullà preserves a mosaic, walls and silos as evidence of the everyday life of its inhabitants during Roman times. It contributes to an understanding of the historical processes that led to Rome's arrival in this area. The surviving structural elements therefore point not only to how the site was used, but also to the long period over which the villa existed.

Sant Pere de Montfullà is a pre-Romanesque basilica with a nave, transept and bell tower. From 1617 to 1760, Sant Pere de Montfullà was remodelled with Baroque and Plateresque elements. The first documentary reference to Sant Pere de Montfullà dates from 882. The building therefore combines its pre-Romanesque basic form with later alterations added over several centuries. Baroque and Plateresque elements characterise the remodelling phase between 1617 and 1760.

Torre Ferrana is a medieval fortified house that was later converted into a stately manor house. The building preserves a bricked-up Coronella window, which may date from the 13th or 14th century. The bricked-up window adds a detail to this building history whose date can cautiously be narrowed down to the 13th or 14th century.

Water and Industry

The Central de Montfullà is a two-storey building with an attic, constructed above the Sèquia Monar. J. Coma i Cros built the Central de Montfullà in 1922 to supply the company J. Coma i Cros, SA, in the Sant Antoni de Salt neighbourhood. The Central de Montfullà is located next to the N-141 at kilometre 112. Its design, its position above the watercourse and its construction in 1922 are thus part of the same industrial history. Its connection with the Sant Antoni de Salt neighbourhood also remains linked to the site's original purpose of supplying the company.

The Sèquia Monar begins at the La Pilastra weir in Montfullà. It has five water steps used to generate hydroelectric power. Its watercourse is therefore connected both to the La Pilastra weir and to the five water steps. The watercourse thus forms the geographical link between its starting point at the weir and the five steps, whose use serves the generation of hydroelectric power.
