Culture and History

The Castell de Medinyà is classified as a Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional. The present-day Castell de Medinyà consists of several buildings arranged around a central courtyard. The former castle precinct probably included the church of Sant Sadurní, which was rebuilt in 1763. Thus, the present architectural complex and traces of earlier uses come together at this site.

The former hospital at the corner of Carrer de Pere Roure and Plaça de la Font is also part of the town’s history. It provided accommodation and services for travellers and pilgrims along this route. The Fira del Conte de Medinyà began in 2010 as a village festival dedicated to storytelling.

Trails

The section of the Camí de Sant Jaume through Medinyà passes under the motorway and then follows the Ter along the route known as the «camí del Congost». This section therefore connects a prominent transport crossing with the riverside route, while preserving the trail’s historic name.

The Un tomb per Medinyà route passes the remains of the Molí de la Farga. The Molí de la Farga was a former grain mill that used water power to grind grain. Un tomb per Medinyà can be explored on foot and by bicycle. The route thus connects the visible mill remains with a former use of water power and can be explored using two different means of transport.

Water and Nature

After passing through a small hydroelectric power station, the Canal Sant Jordi carries irrigation water to the cultivated areas in Medinyà. The lower basin of the Riera de la Farga is considered a landscape of high scenic value and great biodiversity. Hedges of hawthorn and brambles grow along the Riera de la Farga. They provide shelter for small birds and amphibians such as frogs, toads and salamanders.

The references to the Canal Sant Jordi and the Riera de la Farga represent two different functions in the same place: here, irrigation water is carried to the cultivated areas, while there, biodiversity and hedges providing shelter for small birds and amphibians shape the described landscape. The four named peaks also add named landscape features in Medinyà’s near and wider surroundings to this overview.

The peaks of Muntanya de les Mines and Muntanya de Sant Miquel are located in the immediate surroundings of Medinyà. The peaks of Muntanya d'en Massolet and Puig Estela are also located in the surrounding area. The different names and spatial references each form part of the landscape around Medinyà.

Museums

The Museu Arqueològic is a museum in the area around Medinyà. The Catedral de Girona, the Museu d'História de la Ciutat and the Fundacio Rafael Maso / Casa Maso are also located in this area. Thus, in addition to the Castell, the cultural surroundings include several named museums and historic sites.
