Maçanet De La Selva: Discover Nature and Cultural Heritage

Nature
The protected Turons de Maçanet natural area was included in the PEIN by Decree 328/1992. It consists of isolated, heavily wooded hills amid extensive agricultural land. Turons de Maçanet is also home to one of the few Catalan communities of humid holm oak forests of exceptional natural value.
Culture and History
The Poblat Ibèric de Montbarbat dates from the 4th to the 2nd century BC and covers an area of 5,700 square metres. The Romanesque parish church of Sant Llorenç was built around 1050 in Maçanet. Valldemaria was the first female Cistercian monastery in the Països Catalans.
The monument complex on the Turó de Sant Jordi includes the 15th-century Sant Jordi chapel, which was fortified in the 19th century and converted into an optical telegraph tower, as well as the remains of the medieval Torcafelló Castle. The Torre de Puigmarí stands at an elevation of 236 metres and was assigned number 212 on the line.
The Pou de glaç de Buscastell is a remarkable example of 17th-century civil architecture and is considered the largest covered ice house in the country. The Safareig de la Font del Llop de Can Bosch washhouse was built in 1902, restored by the Taller d'Història de Maçanet de la Selva and inaugurated on 6 August 2016. El Pont Vell or Pont del Dimoni was built in the 18th century to cross the drainage channel created to drain the lake.
The Torre de Cartellà comprises a defensive tower and a courtyard with the Sant Jaume chapel, whose façade is designed in the Renaissance style. The Taller d'Història de Maçanet de la Selva presents descriptions and QR codes for virtual tours of heritage sites in Maçanet de la Selva in display windows, including Castell de Torcafelló, Torre Telegràfica de Puigmarí and Pou de Glaç.
The Torre de Marata is an easily accessible manor house on the road from Maçanet towards the Residencial Park development, five minutes by car from the town centre. The interior cannot be visited because it is privately owned.
Paths and Activities
The linear route to the Pou de glaç de Buscastell leads from the town centre through holm oak forests, across fields and through further woodland to the ice house. The circular Ruta dels turons route passes through fields, by farmhouses and small hills, over the Turó de Sant Jordi with the Castell de Torcafelló, and continues to the Turó de Puig Marí, where a recently restored 19th-century civilian optical telegraph tower stands.
Paintball Costa Brava offers three scenarios: the assault on the fortress, the trench and the rugged forest. Urban Escape Maçanet is an escape room game that allows visitors to discover Maçanet. The Festa Major includes concerts, Sardana dancing and exhibitions, as well as other summer activities.
Places to Take a Break
The Parc i Font d'El Molí is 1.5 kilometres from the town centre and is shaded by poplar trees in summer. The park has a children's play area with a zip line, slide and swings, as well as picnic tables. The Área d'Aparcament d'Autocaravanes offers water and electricity connections, as well as a charging facility for electric vehicles.
