Llorà: Romanesque Architecture and Routes to Banya del Boc
Sant Pere de Llorà is the parish church of Llorà. It is located on the road between Sant Gregori and Sant Martí.
Culture and History
Sant Pere de Llorà preserves a well-preserved Romanesque structure. Its basic form consists of a nave and a semicircular apse. Two small side apses were recently discovered. The latest restoration work revealed remains of Romanesque paintings. These remains are located in the lower part of the apse and the side apses.
Can Pascual stands next to the church of Llorà. The building preserves remains of Llorà’s medieval fortified house. A construction phase from the 10th century can be identified on its western façade. Remains of opus spicatum belong to this early construction phase. An upper construction phase from the 12th century features loopholes.
The Ermita de Sant Medir has largely preserved its unchanged Romanesque structure from the 11th century. This structure consists of a nave, a semicircular apse, and a single-arched bell gable. The hermitage is located at the eastern end of the Pla de Sant Joan. It lies between the road and the river.
The Esglesiola de Sant Joan del Pla was built in the 11th century and underwent no major alterations. Its original appearance has been preserved. The Romanesque chapel stands in the middle of the Pla de Sant Joan, on the road between Llorà and Sant Martí.
The Boratuna burial cave is located near the town. Archaeological finds from the early Metal Ages were made inside it.
The historical traces are distributed across various structures and sites. At Sant Pere, the remains of Romanesque paintings are located in the lower part of the apse and the two side apses. At Can Pascual, two construction phases can be identified on the western façade. Sant Medir preserves the single-arched bell gable as part of its Romanesque structure, while the Esglesiola has retained its original appearance.
