Les Mallorquines: Royal Road, Bridge and Catalan Tradition
Culture and History
Carrer de les Mallorquines is a section of the Royal Road that once connected Hostalric with Girona. Can Brugués is one of the houses in the Mallorquines settlement; these houses can be dated to the 15th or 16th century. The presence of the inn along the historic route probably initially encouraged the settlement of people who supported the transport of goods and travellers, the repair of coaches and the provision of supplies for draught animals.
The Pont de la riera de Vallcanera was built as a structure between the 13th and 14th centuries. It is a single-span bridge with a semicircular arch and has a span of approximately 10 metres. The crossing over the Pont ran across two slopes, was about 4 metres wide and was bounded by stone railings. The combination of the semicircular arch, slopes and railings also describes the specific design of the historic crossing. There is currently an information board at the Pont de la riera de Vallcanera providing access to digital reconstructions of the structure.
Tradition and Cuisine
During the Joc dels Ous, farm labourers received their payment in the form of eggs around Easter. On Easter Tuesday, they went to the village inns to play for these eggs in the game known as “joc del 31”. Today, the Joc dels Ous activity is centred at Hostal Mallorquines. The eggs used for this tradition are also sold there. Thus, in this custom, the eggs were both payment and a stake in the game before becoming the focus of Easter Tuesday at the inn.
The Hostal Mallorquines restaurant offers a daily changing menu based on traditional Catalan cuisine. The products for the menu come from the surrounding area. The bodega at Hostal Mallorquines offers homemade wine. It is produced using the establishment’s traditional methods.
