Discover Cardenete: Church, Festivals and the Río Cabriel

Cardenete is one of the municipalities in the province of Cuenca included in the Valle del Cabriel Biosphere Reserve. Along its course through Cardenete, the Río Cabriel offers several bathing spots. The Sendero de las Fuentes PR-CU 51 begins in Cardenete and leads towards the Río Cabriel. It is designated as a well-maintained, moderately difficult circular route. The same trail has a short version of approximately 11 kilometres and a full version of 31.5 kilometres. The different route lengths allow for a direct comparison when planning your day.

Nature

The Cañadilla Martín viewpoint looks out over the winding waters of the Río Cabriel. La Morrita is located at the highest point in Cardenete and offers views across large parts of the surrounding comarca. The circular route, river course and distant views therefore provide three clearly distinct ways of experiencing the landscape.

Culture

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Cardenete is a single-nave Gothic church completed in 1554. In 1983, it was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument. Its furnishings include an organ built in 1767 and restored in 2013. A distinctive wooden ceiling is inspired by Mudéjar coffered ceilings.

The Castillo de Cardenete is an unfinished 16th-century fortress. The Ermita de San Antonio de Padua is a Neoclassical stone building from the 18th century with a Latin-cross floor plan. It is located three kilometres from Cardenete on the road to Villar del Humo and has an adjoining recreational area.

The Museo Fábrica de Harinas is housed in a restored and converted museum in a grain mill dating from the late 19th century and is considered a tourist attraction of the municipality. German machinery as well as essential wooden, fabric and leather components have been preserved there in perfect condition.

Festivals

San Marcos is celebrated in Cardenete every year on 25 April. The festival includes a procession to one of four crosses, the blessing of the fields and the traditional festival pastries known as “Cruces de San Marcos”.

The summer festival held in honour of the Virgen de la Asunción usually takes place from 9 to 15 August and includes verbenas in the square; it is organised by the Peña de Los Sanocháores. The members of each Quinta spend these festival days together in one house, organise the village verbenas, carry the processional figures and put up the traditional enramá at the church entrance.
