Suesa on the Ría de Cubas

Suesa lies along the final section of the Ría de Cubas, at the mouth of the Miera River. In Ribamontán al Mar, the Ría de Cubas near Suesa is an estuary of high ecological importance. Culture

The present-day church of Santa Eulalia in Suesa dates from the late 16th century and has a single-nave body, a transept and a polygonal apse. The high altar is a work by Juan Tolnado Herrera from the mid-17th century and features reliefs as well as some original carvings.

The Trinitarian monastery of Suesa was inaugurated on 19 April 1887. Its church contains a reredos from the mid-17th century, as well as a collection of Baroque paintings and sculptures. The manor house of the Cubas family in Suesa bears the coat of arms of the Cubas lineage.

On the northern wall of the manor house of the Presmanes family is a Baroque sundial, considered one of the most richly decorated sundials in Cantabria. Suesa is documented in 1075 in a charter from the cartulary of the Abbey of Puerto de Santoña in connection with a land grant. A small chapel formed part of the former San Lázaro Hospital of Teas, which served as a leprosarium and pilgrims’ hostel on the Way of St. James.

Paths and water

The de Entremieses route begins in the Barrio Mojante district of Suesa and passes through the rural settlements of Loredo, Suesa and Castanedo. The El Ribero y Praderías route passes through Suesa; the Trinitarian monastery can be visited there.

The two routes differ in their thematic focus and can be considered separately when planning your day. Further local pages lead to Galizano and Somo.
