Oreña between Churches, Cave, Coast and the Camino de Santiago
Accommodation in Oreña
Oreña combines sacred architecture, traces of earlier eras, trails and the coast of the Cantabrian Sea. At the centre of the town stands the parish church of San Pedro on a hill between the districts of Torriente, Caborredondo, San Roque and Viallán, in the centre of Oreña. For travel planning, several themes can be considered independently of one another.
Culture and History
The parish church of San Pedro has a prismatic tower with four storeys, a hipped roof and Herrerian spheres at the corners. In Caborredondo stands the small Ermita de San Bartolomé, dating from the 11th century. On the outside, it has carved corbels with animal and human motifs that support the cornice. The Ermita de San Tito is located in the district of Viallán; the first written references to the chapel date from the 11th century. A pilgrims’ hospital once stood in the immediate vicinity of the Ermita de San Tito.
The Cueva de Cualventi is still partly active and has a total length of almost one kilometre. In 1985, it was classified as a cultural asset of cultural interest. Archaeological remains dating from prehistory to the Middle Ages have been discovered in the cave. Visitors interested in culture can consider architectural details and archaeological traces from different periods separately.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Oreña, you can compare travel dates, room categories and cancellation policies on the relevant offer page. For travel planning, the focuses on culture, nature, pilgrimage route and coast can be weighted separately; depending on the itinerary, they may take on different levels of importance.
Trails and Water
The Camino de Santiago reaches Oreña via an agricultural track and then continues to the town’s parish church. The section of the Camino de Santiago from Oreña to Caborredondo is 2.5 km long. In La Canaleja, there is a water mill whose water flows into a spectacular waterfall. For planning the day, the different lengths and the stated duration can be compared. The 2.5-kilometre section to Caborredondo and the route to the coastal area, which is approximately 5.2 kilometres long, therefore offer two differently measured stretches of trail. The second figure also includes a duration of just over one hour. Such details help organise day plans by distance and time without deciding on the other themes in advance.
The information on length and duration can be used for different day plans. A trail can serve as a focus in its own right, while buildings, the cave, water and the coast provide other points of emphasis. The combination that takes priority is left to the itinerary.
Coast
Cliffs can be seen in Oreña on the Cantabrian Sea. Fishermen and local residents use the Puerto Calderón cove for swimming. A route to this coastal area is approximately 5.2 km long and takes just over one hour. Puerto Calderón was later used as a zinc loading point. A narrow coastal inlet surrounded by cliffs is the mouth of the Rojería River.
